Sterling Lands RMAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week Honors

1/17/2023 2:02:00 PM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomore sprinter Kymani Sterling of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's track & field team has been tabbed as this week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Men's Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

Sterling marks the third UCCS track & field student-athlete to earn a weekly conference award for the 2022-23 indoor season, with redshirt sophomore Melissa Moreni and redshirt senior Afewerki Zeru claiming track athlete of the week honors on Dec. 6 and Dec. 13, respectively.

In his first competition of the indoor season on Saturday at the Potts Invitational, the North Platte, Neb., native put forth an impressive effort in the men's 200m dash as he clocked a raw time of 21.81s to finish in sixth place among a field of 38 sprinters, 21 of which being NCAA Division I athletes. Sterling's raw time registered as an indoor personal best and sits as the third fastest 200m mark in UCCS indoor program history. His altitude-converted time of 21.88s currently ranks as the second fastest 200m time in the RMAC this season and is less than two-tenths of a second away from reaching the NCAA qualifying threshold for the event.

Sterling and the Mountain Lions will look to continue their success this weekend as they prepare to host the Colorado Running Company UCCS Invite on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse. Field events are set to get underway at 11:30 a.m. followed by track events at 1 p.m.
