Mountain Lions Sweep SWOSU, Fall to LCU in Five

LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team continued the win streak after defeating Southwestern Oklahoma State University in three sets Saturday morning at the Lubbock Christian University Chaps Classic, but fell in five sets to the home team in their final preseason match, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE
  • UCCS started the match against Southwestern forcing an attack error to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead.  The Dawgs evened the set at 1-1 on a UCCS error, but the Mountain Lions never relinquished the lead as they rolled to a 25-18 set win.  Raegen Emery and Lauryn Shockley each notched four kills in the first set as Nicole Medlin assisted on three blocks.
  • For the first time this weekend, UCCS trailed by as many as three points, but bounced back in the second set to win in extra points, 26-24.  A kill from Reilly Babcock gave UCCS set point, 24-21, but the Dawgs rattled off three straight points to tie the set at 24-all.  UCCS put the set away from a kill by Babcock and an ace from Julia Geiger to seal the win.
  • The Mountain Lions started the third set with a 7-0 lead but the Dawgs came back again to eventually tie the set at 14-all.  UCCS responded strong to close out SWOSU on an 11-2 run.  Emery accounted for four of the Mountain Lions seven kills during the run combined with back-to-back aces from Mackenzie Ransom to boost UCCS to the sweep win.
 
MATCH STATISTICS VS. SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE
  • Shockley and Emery combined for 21 of UCCS' 41 kills.  Shockley hit .240 at the net and added nine digs and a block assist.
  • Ammerman posted nine kills, three digs and three assists as Babcock set up the Mountain Lions on 33 assists and a match high six aces.  She added eight digs and five blocks.
  • The Mountain Lions dug up 42 attacks behind Jordyn Kinsey's match high 14 digs.
  • Medlin assisted on seven blocks and added three kills.
  • UCCS recorded a season high 11 aces.
           
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN
  • For the first time all weekend, the Mountain Lions surrendered a set, falling to host team LCU in the first set of the match, 25-18. The Mountain Lions hit a match low .111 on 11 kills and 36 attempts.
  • Set two was a different pace for UCCS and they edged the Chaps, 25-21.  A kill from Shockley gave the Mountain Lions a 10-9 lead they would keep the remainder of the match as they finished with 16 kills, six blocks and 15 assists.
  • The third set went in favor of the Chaps but UCCS would even the match in the fourth set, 2-2, after a 25-23 triumph.  Ammerman put down a kill to give UCCS the 23-22 advantage, followed by a kill from Emery and an ace from Ammerman before LCU called a timeout trailing 24-22.  Kiana Fallaha brought the Chaps within one point, 24-23, but a service ace from the home team gave the Mountain Lions the 25-23 win.
  • The deciding set belonged to the Chaps as they outscored UCCS, 15-8.  LCU led by six points, 8-2, before taking the match win, 15-8.
 
MATCH STATISTICS VS. LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN
  • Emery led both teams with 23 kills on 51 attempts and posted a .294 hitting mark.
  • Ammerman chipped in 15 kills and a .297 hitting mark while assisting on five blocks.
  • Medlin assisted on a match high eight blocks to go with five kills. 
  • Babcock notched 50 set assists, three kills and an ace.
  • Defensively, Kinsey dug up a match high 21 digs.
  • The Mountain Lions' 63 kills matched a season high, while their 59 assists, 65 digs and 11 blocks were all season highs.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Babcock's six aces against Southwestern tied the all-time program high for most aces in a three-set match.  It also marked a career high for Babcock's as well as a career high five blocks.  Against LCU, she posted a career high 50 assists.
  • Ammerman's five blocks against the Chaps were career highs.
  • Emery also had a career night against LCU with 23 kills and three blocks.
  • Medlin's eight blocks against the Chaps matched her career high.
  • Kinsey moved into fifth place in the career record books for digs.  Through this weekend, she has 1,470 career digs and needs just two most to tie Melissa Clark for fourth all-time.  Kinsey is 219 digs away from taking sole possession of thrid all-time (Laura Meeter, 1,688 digs).
  • The last time UCCS won three straight matches was in 2019 (Sept. 21-28).
  • The last time the Mountain Lions swept three straight opponents was in 2017 (Nov. 4-11).
 
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will return home to play their first match of the home season on Tuesday, Sept. 6 against Colorado State University Pueblo at 7 p.m.
