Volleyball Sweeps Friday’s Opponents at LCU Chaps Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas– Playing in their second straight weekend in the Lone Star State, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team opened the Lubbock Christian University Chaps Classic with a 3-0 win over University of Texas-Permian Basin, followed by another 3-0 victory over Adams State University.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. TEXAS-PERMIAN BASIN
  • The Mountain Lions took a 3-0 lead in the opening set of the weekend and never trailed until UTPB came back from a four-point deficit to take their first lead of the morning, 25-24.  Trailing for the first time of the set, UCCS came out of a time out and put down three straight kills from Raegen Emery, Reilly Babcock and Lauryn Shockley to take the set win, 27-25.
  • The second set rolled smoother for the Mountain Lions as they earned a 25-16 win.  UCCS never trailed against the Falcons and led by as many as seven points.  Babcock connected with Julia Geiger to boost UCCS' lead to 20-13.  For the second straight set, Shockley netted the set-winning point, this time from an ace to give a 2-0 match lead.
  • Both teams started the third set trading leads and tying the set five times in the early part of the set.  With the action tied at 6-6, UCCS went on a 9-1 run that featured seven kills and three errors by the Falcons to take a 15-7 lead they would not relinquish.  Shockley hit a set high eight kills and .636 at the net as the Mountain Lions rolled to a 25-13 set win and the match sweep.
 
MATCH STATISTICS VS. TEXAS-PERMIAN BASIN
  • Shockley notched a match high 17 kills and served up three aces while hitting an impressive .387 at the net.  Hannah Ammerman chipped in eight kills on 15 attempts and finished the match with a .333 hitting mark.
  • Along with Babcock's 32 set assists, she added three kills on five attempts and dug up nine attacks.  Jordyn Kinsey led the defense with 12 digs and added four assists.
  • UCCS finished the match with 49 kills and a season high .302 hitting mark.
  • The Falcons were led by Aquincia Strambler's nine kills.
           
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. ADAMS STATE
  • The Mountain Lions kept their momentum going from the morning match into the afternoon meeting with Adams State.  UCCS jumped to a 3-0 lead before scanting to a 7-1 advantage as Shockley served three straight aces.  UCCS never trailed or let the Grizzlies tie the set.  Shockley accounted for seven of the Mountain Lions 14 kills in the first set and hit 1.000.  Emery added four kills on eight attempts without a hitting error as UCCS took set one, 25-17.
  • Set two featured just one tie with UCCS holding the advantage the rest of the set.  UCCS put together several scoring runs and gained a 20-12 lead after Babcock gave the Mountain Lions a sideout off a kill.  Ammerman and Emery finished the set with two straight kills for the 25-18 set win.
  • The third and final set saw both teams battle back and forth with 10 ties and six lead changes.  Down by three, 21-18, UCCS racked up four straight points with kills from Ammerman, Emery and Geiger and an ace from Joe Barela.  Three ties later and the set knotted at 24-24, Babcock connected with Shockley for match point and capped the win by forcing ASU into an attack error.
 
MATCH STATISTICS VS. ADAMS STATE
  • Emery and Shockley tied for match high honors with 12 kills each.  Emery finished the match hitting .308 on 26 attempts.
  • Babcock dished out 35 assists and registered 10 digs and three kills in the process, while Kinsey led both teams with 18 digs.
  • UCCS combined for 46 kills, a .258 hitting mark and a season high 10 aces.  Defensively, they added 52 digs and six blocks, three of which came Nicole Medlin.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UCCS improves to 2-0 all-time against Texas-Permian Basin.  The last time the two teams faced each other was Sept. 6, 2013 in Canyon, Texas with the Mountain Lions winning the inaugural meeting, 3-2.
  • Today's back-to-back sweeps are the first time since 2019 that UCCS has swept opponents in two straight matches (Westminster and New Mexico Highlands).
  • UCCS has won eight straight matches against Adams State and are 6-2 against the Grizzlies on a neutral court.
  • Babcock's four aces are tied for the eighth most all-time in a three-set match.

  • The Mountain Lions will close out the preseason portion of their schedule tomorrow against Southwestern Oklahoma State University (10 a.m., MT) and host school LCU (2 p.m. MT).
