Box Score 2 CANYON, TEXAS – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team wrapped up the season opening weekend with a split at the West Texas A&M BritKare Lady Buff Classic. UCCS won the morning matchup against Adams State University, 3-1, but were swept in the afternoon match by No. 12 Northwest Missouri State University.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. ADAMS STATE
- Facing off against the Grizzlies in a non-conference matchup, the Mountain Lions went into extra points in the bookend sets.
- UCCS won the opening set, 26-24, and trailed four times but by no more than a single point. ASU's Cindy Garcia put down a kill to give her team a 23-22 lead before UCCS closed it out by outscoring the Grizzlies, 4-1. Hannah Ammerman matched Garcia's kill and tied the set at 23-23, followed by another kill from Julia Geiger. Both teams called consecutive timeouts that led to an ASU kill from Cora Ellis to tie the set for the 16th time, but a Grizzlies service error gave UCCS set point, 25-24, as Lauryn Shockley closed out the set with a kill from Reilly Babcock.
- Set two belonged to the Grizzlies who hit .481 and held the Mountain Lions to a -.172 hitting mark. UCCS snagged a 2-0 lead that quickly diminished as the Grizzlies went on a 17-3 run on their way to a 25-8 set win to even the match at 1-1.
- UCCS responded in the third set, scoring the final four points in a 25-16 win. The Mountain Lions nearly tripled their kills from the second set with 14 behind Shockley's set high six kills.
- In the final set against the Grizzlies, UCCS trailed by three halfway through the set, 17-14. Shockley and the Mountain Lions rattled off three straight points from a kill and ace by Shockley and a service error from UCCS to tie the set at 17-17. Both teams went into extra points for the second time of the match but the duo of Shockley and Nicole Medlin blocked a Grizzlies attack that gave UCCS their second win of the season, 28-26.
MATCH STATISTICS VS. ADAMS STATE
- Shockley registered a double-double with a match high 17 kills and 12 digs while hitting .343 on 35 attempts.
- Ammerman added 12 kills as UCCS finished the match with 51 kills. Babcock posted 35 assists, three kills, nine digs and two aces.
- Three Mountain Lions registered double digit digs behind Mackenzie Ransom's 17 digs. Jordyn Kinsey racked up 16 digs along with Shockley's 12.
- As a team, UCCS posted a season high 63 digs and seven blocks to go with 51 kills, 45 assists and eight aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. NORTHWEST
- Taking on their second nationally ranked team of the weekend, the Mountain Lions ended the weekend with a 3-0 setback to No. 12 Northwest Missouri State.
- The Bearcats held the Mountain Lions to 27 kills on 104 attempts and a .010 hitting mark. UCCS posted the most kills of the match in the first set, 13, but were restricted to 14 kills and 18 attack errors in the final two sets.
- With set point on the line in the first set and down by three, 24-21, UCCS forced the Bearcats to commit three errors along with a kill from Ransom to take a 25-24 lead. After a kill from Northwest to tie the match at 25-all, Shockley tied the set again with a kill but the Bearcats ended the set with the final three points. UCCS was unable to bounce back after going extras with Northwest, falling in the next two sets, 13-25 and 11-25.
MATCH STATISTICS VS. NORTHWEST
- Shockley led the Mountain Lions with eight kills while Babcock quarterbacked the offense with 17 assists. Babcock also dug up a team high nine digs followed by Kinsey's eight digs.
- UCCS finished the match with 27 kills, five aces, 26 assists and two blocks.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The morning match against Adams State cut into the Grizzlies all-time lead, 32-25. However, the Mountain Lions have won the last seven meetings and are 5-2 all-time when taking on the Grizzlies in a neutral site match.
- Today's match against the Bearcats was the first time both teams have played each other.
- In 14 sets this weekend, UCCS went to extra points five times.
- Shockley leads the team with 35 kills and 41 points while Ammerman is hitting a team high .154.
- Babcock has set up a team high 109 assists and six aces, while Kinsey (42 digs) and Medlin (13 blocks) lead the defensive unit.
UP NEXT
- UCCS will head back to the Lone Star State Sept. 2-3 for the LCU Chaps Classic. The Mountain Lions will take on University of Texas-Permian Basin and Adams State on Friday, followed by two matches against Southwestern Oklahoma State University and host team Lubbock Christian University on Saturday.
