Softball Has Strong Defense In Pair Of Close Games Against CMU

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team played a couple of close games including one in extra innings, and despite a great defensive effort, it wasn't enough as the Colorado Mesa Mavericks completed the sweep.

How It Happened | Game One
  • After a quiet first inning, the Mountain Lions struck first on an error by Colorado Mesa that got Paige White home from third and gave UCCS the early 1-0 lead. The lead wouldn't last long as the Mavericks got on the board via a Lauren Wedman solo home run to lead off the top of the third inning and tied the game at one.
  • Things opened up in the top of the fourth as Mesa took the lead on a two-run double by Ashley Bradford and clinched Mesa's first lead of the game at 3-1. CMU would get an extra run in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 4-1. The Mountain Lions would threaten with two runners in scoring position in the bottom half of the frame but would not get a run across.

How It Happened | Game Two
  • Colorado Mesa got off to a fast start with a leadoff home run by Bradford, but the damage would be limited after a highlight reel diving catch by center fielder Perez to end the inning. UCCS would get that run back on a Sawyer Brewster two-run moonshot to left field and took the 2-1 advantage.
  • Mesa would come back and tie the game up at two in the top of the fourth inning on a Myah Arrieta solo homer, but the UCCS defense picked up after that ending the fifth inning with a double caught stealing of two CMU would-be base runners and ending the sixth inning with an impressive diving catch by Bryn Horton.
  • After the seventh inning ended quietly, the Mavericks broke the dam with back-to-back home runs to score three in the top of the eighth inning. UCCS would go down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the frame and end the game 5-2.
