Fourth Quarter Attack Aids Mountain Lions in 60-57 Win at WCU

GUNNISON, Colo. – A fourth quarter attack helped the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team to a 60-57 win Friday at Western Colorado University inside of Paul Wright Gym.  The win was the Mountain Lions third win in four games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gracie Haneborg connected with Jasmine Jeffcoat for a layup and the first points of the game just 22 seconds from the jump ball.  The Mountain Lions controlled the opening stanza, taking a 15-9 lead after 10 minutes of action.  Jeffcoat led the Mountain Lions with five points in the opening stanza as six players made at least one field goal.
  • Western came back in the second quarter, outscoring UCCS 11-5 to knot the game at 20-20 in the first six minutes.  Western tied the game three times before taking just their second lead of the game with 35 seconds left in the half when Natalie Jojola hit a jumper to give the Mountaineers a 27-26 lead at the half.
  • The Mountaineers continued their momentum into the third stanza as they built a six-point lead after going on a 10-3 run.  The Mountain Lions quickly reacted and didn't let the lead build. Ellie Moore converted a three-point play before Alexa Dominguez took advantage of an offensive rebound and put it back to a deuce.  Maison White evened the score at 36-all after making the first of two free throws.
  • Trailing 46-41 to start the final stanza, Jeffcoat netted the first four points for UCCS but Western Colorado rebuilt their lead to match their largest lead of the game, 51-45, with 8:05 remaining.
  • UCCS rolled up their sleeves and came out of a media timeout to score 12 straight points.  Bo Shaffer and White combined for the first eight points before Agar Farres scored her first basket of the game.  White finished the scoring spree with a layup to give UCCS their largest lead of the game, 57-51 with 3:04 left in regulation as she accounted for six of UCCS' 12 points.
  • A layup and two free throws from Western's Katie Dalton cut into the Mountain Lions lead, 57-55, but a turnover by the Mountaineers led to a layup by Moore.  The Mountaineers Brooklyn Seymour gave her team a chance as she hit a jumper to bring WCU within two points, 59-57.  UCCS' defense held WCU scoreless for the final 69 seconds while Jeffcoat scored the final point of the game from the free throw line, sealing the win for UCCS, 60-57.
 
GAME STATISTICS
  • The Mountain Lions recorded their best shooting performance of the game in the final quarter, 56.3 percent (9-of-16) while holding WCU to just three field goals.
  • White came off the bench to score a team high 15 points after making 6-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-8 from the free throw line.  She added a team high seven rebounds to go with an assist and a blocked shot.
  • Jeffcoat finished the night leading the starters with 10 points.  She chipped in six rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
  • Sophie Abela registered a game high four assists while Farres tallied three assists, three steals, six rebounds and two points.
  • The Mountain Lions finished the night shooting 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the floor.
  • Free throws hindered UCCS as they shot a season low 33.3 percent (6-of-18).
  • Western made nine fewer field goals (17-of-43, 39.5 percent) than UCCS but hit on 17-of-22 free throws for 77.3 percent.
  • UCCS nearly doubled their points in the paint against WCU, outscoring the Mountaineers, 40-22.
  • The Mountain Lions bench quadrupled WCU's bench, netting 42 points to WCU's 10 points.
  • Dalton led all players with 22 points.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Mountain Lions committed only nine turnovers, their second fewest this season.
  • UCCS outrebounded WCU by three, making it the 16th time this season UCCS has outrebounded their opponent.

  • The Mountain Lions will travel to Durango, Colo. to take on Fort Lewis College on Saturday.  Action begins at 5 p.m. from Whalen Gymnasium.
