LAKEWOOD, Colo. – A strong defensive effort by the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team led to a 72-51 road win against Colorado Christian University Friday night at the CCU Events Center. The Mountain Lions forced CCU to commit 26 turnovers which led to 25 of the Mountain Lions 72 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions used the first quarter to warm up to take a 15-12 lead after the opening stanza, despite shooting just 26.7 percent from the floor (4-of-15).
- CCU's Agnes Paul hit the first bucket of the game but UCCS tied the game 45 seconds later. After a CCU turnover, Gracie Haneborg found Alexa Dominguez for UCCS' first points. After another CCU turnover, Haneborg was then on the receiving end of the Cougars mishap to give UCCS a 4-2 lead.
- Four lead changes and two ties later, the Mountain Lions held a three-point advantage after the first quarter. UCCS scored 12 of their 15 points from six CCU turnovers while hitting 7-of-10 free throws.
- UCCS caught fire in the second quarter starting with an 8-2 run. Ellie Moore, Bo Shaffer, Haneborg and Shelby Megyeri went 4-for-4 from the floor in a span of two minutes and nine seconds to grow their lead to seven points, 23-16.
- CCU halted UCCS' run with two made free throws, but the Mountain Lions finished the half outscoring CCU, 12-3. Megyeri found Haneborg at the 6:37 mark in the second quarter for an outside jumper followed by a fastbreak layup from Jasmine Jeffcoat. A steal by Dominguez led to a bucket from Megyeri to extend UCCS' lead to 10, 30-20 with 4:49 remaining in the half. Shaffer found Moore to close out the half as Moore drained a jumper with just three seconds left, giving the Mountain Lions a 32-21 lead at the half.
- The Mountain Lions controlled the second half, outscoring CCU, 40-30, and shooting a solid 46.4 percent from the floor (13-of-28) and hitting 13-of-21 free throws. Thirteen of the Cougars 30 second half points came from the free throw line where they made 13-of-15. UCCS forced the Cougars into 13 second half turnovers and a cool 32.0 field goal shooting mark (8-of-25).
- In the final quarter, Megyeri and Haneborg combined for three straight free throws followed by a driving layup from Megyeri and another driving layup from Moore to highlight a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter that gave the Mountain Lions their largest lead of the game, 64-40, with 5:57 left in regulation. Megyeri paced the Mountain Lions with eight points in the final two stanzas behind 2-of-4 field goals and sinking three of four free throws.
GAME STATISTICS
- Megyeri came off the bench to lead all scorers with 15 points. In 23 minutes on the court, she made 5-of-11 field goals, 3-of-4 free throws and both attempts from downtown.
- Moore was second on the team in scoring as she netted 12 bench points on 5-of-9 field goals. Moore tied Jeffcoat with a game high eight rebounds each.
- Haneborg chipped in 11 points to go with three rebounds and a game high three dimes.
- UCCS shot 42.4 percent from the floor (25-of-59), 2-of-8 from downtown and they hit 20-of-31 free throws (64.5 percent).
- Christen Curry led CCU's offense with 15 points in 28 minutes off the bench.
- UCCS outscored the Cougars in the paint, 32-14, and on second chance points, 10-8.
- Moore and Megyeri combined to score 27 points as the Mountain Lions bench outscored CCU, 41-27.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Tonight's win over CCU completed the series sweep against the Cougars and marked the second series sweep of the season for UCCS (Adams State University).
- The 21-point win is the second largest win this season (22-point win against Southwest on Nov. 27, 2021).
- The 20 made free throws and 31 free throws attempts are the fourth most in a game this season, and the most since the two teams paired up on Jan. 22, 2022 when UCCS went 25-of-36 from the line. In both games this season, the Mountain Lions went 45-of-67 in free throws against CCU.
- The 26 forced turnovers are the second most this season, and the most since the season opener at Midwestern State University on Nov. 12, 2021 (28).
