HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After coming off a huge conference victory the night before, the Mountain Lions looked like they were going to continue their red-hot shooting as Jon'il Fugett nailed a three-point jumpshot a minute into the game to open the scoring for either side.
- The scoring would go back and forth with neither team gaining a substantial lead before losing it and shortly being overtaken by the other side. A statement dunk from Devin Smith tied the game at 8:52, one of eight times the game would be deadlocked in the first half.
- Wyatt Dolberry had an excellent first half as he put up 10 points over the first 20 minutes. His scoring was capped by a three-pointer that put the Mountain Lions up one as the clock was winding down. The Eagles quickly responded and went into halftime with the lead.
- The back-and-forth story continued into the second half and had the appearance that fans were in for a tight finish. That was until Alijah Comithier sparked a 22-2 run with a driving layup. The run featured two Mac Stodart threes and ended with a Jon'il Fugett layup that put the Mountain Lions up 17 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
- With the offense alive and firing on all cylinders, Geoff Kelly floated a beautiful pass to Comithier for an easy lay-in. Shortly after, Comithier forced a turnover and brought the house down with a powerful two-handed dunk.
- The large Mountain Lion lead would be maintained down the stretch and continued to feature electric offensive play with Comithier completing an alley-oop set up by Fugett. To add to an impressive scoring night, Jezza McKenzie got in on the action late by nailing a shot from beyond the arc to put the Mountain Lions up 23 with little over four minutes remaining.
- After a couple of trips to the charity stripe, the Eagles would slowly chip into the Mountain Lion lead, but this would have little effect on the outcome as the Mountain Lions killed the clock and captured an 87-68 victory.
STATS FROM THE GAME:
- There were plenty of points to go around tonight as five Mountain Lions scored double-digit points. Comithier led the way for the second night in a row with 24, followed by McKenzie with 17, who made three shots from beyond the arc. Fugett, Mac Stodart, and Wyatt Dolberry were the remaining Mountain Lions to eclipse the 10-point mark.
- When it came to the defensive side of the ball, the Mountain Lions would not allow any quick buckets as Chadron State only scored one fastbreak point. On the opposite end, UCCS scored 25 fastbreak points.
- The Mountain Lions scoring exploded in the second half as they shot 60.6 percent from the field as a team, nailing more than half of their shots from downtown.
- In the first half of play, there were a total of nine lead changes as well as being in a tie eight times. After the second half started, the Mountain Lions regained the lead quickly and never surrendered it, resulting in only one lead change for the second half.
- Those who shot often, shot well for the Mountain Lions, as each of the aforementioned Mountain Lions who tallied more than 10 points sunk at least half of their total shots. Bobby Martin was the sole Mountain Lion to shoot higher than 50 percent from the field with less than 10 points, as he made two shots on three attempts, one of his makes being from three-point range.
- Comithier matched his steal total from the night before with three takeaways.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Comithier has now eclipsed 20 points in a game for the 13th time this season.
- The Mountain Lions protected the ball well tonight by only allowing nine turnovers, their third fewest in a game this season.
- With five makes on six attempts, Fugett records his second highest shooting percentage for a single game this season at 83.3 percent.
- The Mountain Lions have now scored at least 80 points in a game 11 times this season and remain undefeated in such games. In addition, they shot above 50 percent from the field for the game. They also remain undefeated in games where they make at least half of their total shots as a team.
