First Half Run Too Much For Mountain Lions to Comeback in 67-59 Defeat

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – 13 turnovers and 13 fouls committed by the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Women's Basketball team in the first half lead to Cameron University scoring eight points off of turnovers and nine points off of free throws resulting in a 38-24 deficit at half as the Aggies went on to complete a 67-59 victory.

  • All-Time Series: This is the second matchup held between the Aggies and Mountain Lions. The Aggies now lead the series 2-to-0
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The first eight minutes of the contest, the Mountain Lions struggled to get going. With the score being 17-6 with 2:48 to go in the first quarter, Sophie Abela, who had four of the Mountain Lions 10 points in the first quarter, nailed a contested jump shot to cut the Aggies lead to 17-8.
  • The Mountain Lions were lacking defensively in the first quarter overall fouling the Aggies eight times, resulting in 8-of-9 free throws made by CU.
  • CU kept this momentum by going on a 7-0 run and were up 28-10 with 8:07 to go in the second quarter.
  • The Mountain Lions cut into the Aggies lead when Jessica Nation scored her sixth point of the quarter, making a fast break layup assisted by Abela, making the score 30-16. The Aggies and Mountain Lions then traded buckets, both scoring eight points, resulting in the score being 38-24 at half time.
  • Coming out of the half, the Mountain Lions caught fire, shooting 52.9 percent (9-of-17) overall from the field in the third quarter. After an incredible move to the paint, Gracie Haneborg cut the lead to just nine after the made layup, cutting the Aggies lead to 46-37 with 5:13 to go in the third quarter.
  • At the start of the fourth quarter, the Mountain Lions cut the Aggies lead to just four after Talia DePetrillo nailed a three making the score 50-46 with 8:44 remaining in the game.
  • After trading buckets back and forth in a hard fought fourth quarter, UCCS had some costly turnovers down the stretch, resulting in the Aggies getting their lead back up to 10 points with 1:35 to go in the game and holding on for the win.
 
 
GAME STATISTICS 
  • Maison White led UCCS in scoring with 12 points. White made 6-of-8 from the floor and added seven rebounds.
  • With both teams having a high number of turnovers, UCCS had five more then CU, with UCCS having 25 turnovers and the Aggies having 20 turnovers.
  • CU visited the free throw line way more often than UCCS by attempting 26 free throws to the Mountain Lions 11 free throw attempts.
  • UCCS outscored the Aggies in the paint (36-28), fast break points (11-3), and points from the bench (25-11).
  • The Mountain Lions landed 26-of-59 field goals for 44.1 percent but didn't have much going for them from three, shooting 3-of-12 (25 percent) and 36.4 percent from the free throw line (4-of-11).
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 
  • The Mountain Lions start their season with a loss against a tough Aggies team.  
  • Abela dished out a team high eight assists while Agar Farres snagged a team high in rebounds with eight.
  • UCCS Guard and true freshman, Rylie Ottmann played 11 minutes in her first collegiate game, collecting one steal.
