HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions started off in control in the first two minutes and 37 seconds of the game, leading 8-3 with four points from sophomore forward Maison White and four points from sophomore guard Amyah Moore Allen.
- Throughout the first quarter, MSU scored most of their points off free throws going 9-of-12 (75 percent) to score their 15 points. UCCS was down 13-15 with a few seconds left until Jessica Nation hit a jump shot tying the game at 15 to end the first quarter.
- With 36 fouls called on both teams combined in the first half, UCCS struggled to start the second quarter, allowing the Mustangs to go on a 20-10 run that included two three pointers from MSU and more free throws going 6-of-7 (85.7 percent) to make the lead 35-25 with 4:30 to go in the first half. The Mountain Lions finished the quarter strong by cutting the deficit to 42-35 going into the half.
- The Mountain Lions stayed in the game throughout the start of the second half, but lost momentum after an 11-5 run from MSU resulting in a UCCS 12-point deficit. The Mustangs would maintain this lead to end the quarter, leading the game 61-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
- With 7:56 to go in the game, freshman Rylie Ottmann sunk a jumper off an assist from Mariah Derksen that cut the Mustangs lead to ten. MSU responded with a bucket nearly anytime UCCS would score resulting in a 17-15 run of back-and-forth baskets being traded in a six-minute stretch and with 1:52 left in the game, UCCS was down 80-66.
- The Mountain Lions fought hard in the last two minutes of the game, being down only nine after an athletic layup made with a foul by Moore Allen. Making the free throw, Moore Allen cut the lead to nine with 41 seconds remaining in the game. The Mustangs broke the Mountain Lion's press defense and held on to win the game 80-72.
GAME STATISTICS
- Moore Allen led the game in scoring with 21 points scored on 8-of-15 shooting, also adding five rebounds, two assists, and four steals.
- With 72 total fouls called in this game, both teams shot a very high number of free throws. MSU was 26-of-36 (72.2 percent) from the line and UCCS was 25-of-41 (61 percent) from the charity stripe.
- UCCS outscored MSU in points from turnovers 23-15, from the paint 34-28, and on fast break opportunities, outscoring the Mustangs 26-5.
- Sophie Abela was second on the team in scoring tonight with 14 points while Jessica Nation scored 10 points off the bench going 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
- Both teams were extremely even on the boards, with MSU collecting 39 rebounds and UCCS collecting 40 rebounds.
- UCCS was cold from three shooting 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) while the Mustangs were hot, shooting 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from downtown.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Mountain Lions drop two games in a row to start the season on back-to-back nights after a 67-59 loss to Cameron University on Friday night.
- This was a close contest, with 11 lead changes and five times where the game was tied, but MSU led the game for a total of 30 minutes and 27 seconds while UCCS only lead for seven minutes and 44 seconds of total time.
- Ottmann scores her first career points tonight, having eight total points in 18 minutes of play.
