Women’s Basketball Falls Short to Hardrockers in South Dakota, 73-71

RAPID CITY, S.D. – After chalking up two straight wins, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team fell on the road Saturday night to South Dakota School of Mines, 73-71.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • On the first shot attempt of the game, Sophie Abela drained a three-pointer to give UCCS a 3-0 lead. After two quick free throws and a trey from SDSM, the Hardrockers kept rolling and snatched a 13-point lead in the first quarter, 24-11, with 3:37 left.
  • The Mountain Lions clawed their way back after a 10-0 run.  Ellie Moore started the scoring spree with a jumper before Alexa Dominguez stole the ball that led to a bucket by Shelby Megyeri.  Megyeri kept rolling as she knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to bring UCCS within three points, 24-21, with 1:04 left in the first quarter.
  • Piper Bauer answered Megyeri's three with a trey of her own, but Bo Shaffer found Jasmine Jeffcoat in the paint for the final score of the quarter as UCCS scored on their final six possessions.
  • UCCS started the second quarter down 27-23. SDSM made the first of two free throws to open the quarter before the Mountain Lions rattled off six straight points.  The Hardrockers responded and led by as many as nine points, scoring 10 of their 19 points from the charity stripe.
  • Trailing by 11 points early in the second half, 48-37, the Mountain Lions once again mounted a comeback and tied the game at 50-50.  Gracie Haneborg netted the first points of the half for UCCS from a layup followed by two free throws from Agar Farres.  Dominguez picked up an offensive rebound and put it back in to bring UCCS within seven, 43-50.  Abela scored a fastbreak layup from Haneborg before a free throw from Nation and two baskets from Jeffcoat tied the game at 50-all.
  • With time winding down in the final minutes of regulation and the Mountain Lions trailing by four, 69-65, Abela found Maison White in the paint for two points.  Nation then blocked a layup attempt that eventually led her to scoring the game-tying jumper, 69-69, with 46 ticks remaining.
  • On the next trip down the floor, White blocked another layup attempt by SDSM, but an offensive team rebound led to a set shot and three-pointer for the Hardrockers who took a 72-69 lead with :17 remaining in the game.  After a 30-second timeout, White drained a jumper in the paint to cut into the Hardrockers' lead, 72-71, but SDSM claimed the win after making one of two free throws with one second remaining and a 73-71 win for the home team.
 
GAME STATISTICS
  • Jessica Nation came off the bench to lead the Mountain Lions in scoring with 15 points.  Nation drained two three pointers and made 6-of-14 from the floor.
  • Shelby Megyeri also added two treys and chipped in 12 points off the bench.
  • Sophie Abela led the starters with 10 points and was perfect from the floor, making all four field goal attempts, including one from three-point range. 
  • Agar Farres pulled down a game high 10 rebounds and added five points, a steal and an assist. 
  • Ellie Moore dished out a game high four dimes and was one point shy of double digits.
  • The Mountain Lions came out on fire in the opening quarter, shooting 62.5 percent from the floor (10-of-16) and 60 percent from long range (3-of-5).  The Hardrockers used home court to their advantage, besting UCCS in the opening quarter with a 75 percent field goal mark (9-of-12).
  • Both teams finished the night shooting 41 percent from the floor.  The Mountain Lions hit on 30-of-73 while SDSM made 21-of-51.
  • Free throws were a difference maker in the game as the Hardrockers attempted 16 more free throws than UCCS.  SDSM made 23-of-27 free throws while the Mountain Lions went 5-for-11.  SDSM made 10-of-11 free throws in the second quarter, matching UCCS' total attempts for the game.
  • UCCS outscored the Hardrockers in the paint, 36-22, on second chance points, 16-6, and off turnovers, 14-5.
  • Bailey Johnson of SDSM led all scorers behind 27 points after making 6-of-11 from the floor, 3-of-5 from long distance and all 12 free throw attempts.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Mountain Lions committed a season low eight turnovers.
  • UCCS pulled down five more rebounds than SDSM tonight, making it the 15th time this season UCCS has outrebounded their opponent.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will continue their four-game road trip Feb. 4-5 when they head to Western Colorado University Friday night, and Fort Lewis College on Saturday.
