LAS VEGAS, N.M. – After a strong opening quarter of action and stalwart second half performance, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team earned their second consecutive win after taking down New Mexico Highlands University Tuesday night in Las Vegas, N.M., 66-48.  The Mountain Lions have won three of their last four games and four of their last six.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP

  • Records: UCCS (7-11, 5-7 RMAC) | NMHU (4-13, 1-10 RMAC)
  • Facility | Location:  John A. Wilson Complex | Las Vegas, N.M.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams traded the first four baskets of the game before Bo Shaffer gave UCCS their first lead of the game, 7-5, three and half minutes into the action.
  • Shaffer's bucket sparked an 11-0 run that featured six points scored in the paint and four from turnovers as Sophie Abela capped off the run with a layup at the two-minute mark, boosting UCCS' lead to 16-5.  A quick answer from NMHU cut into the Mountain Lions lead as they ended the first quarter with a 16-7 lead.
  • UCCS made 7-of-14 field goals in the opening stanza while holding NMHU to just 3-of-13.  Ten of the Mountain Lions points were scored in the paint and six came from NMHU turnovers.
  • The Mountain Lions kept the momentum going in the second quarter as Shelby Megyeri stole the ball that led to a fast break layup for her first points of the night.  The next trip down the court resulted in a steal by Agar Farres and a layup from Gracie Haneborg. Jasmine Jeffcoat put her name in the scorebook when Megyeri found her for a layup to extend UCCS' lead to 15 points, 22-7, with 8:25 left in the first half.
  • The Cowgirls responded and thwarted the Mountain Lions scoring spree for the final eight minutes of the half.  NMHU outscored UCCS, 19-2, while hitting three three-pointers to regain the lead heading into halftime, 26-24.
  • The lead didn't last long for the home team as the Mountain Lions stormed out of halftime to score the first 16 points of the game.  Moore quickly knotted the game at 26-26 as Haneborg and Alexa Dominguez combined for three layups.  Moore drew a foul for the Mountain Lions only two free throws of the quarter.  On the next defensive trip down the court, White picked up an offensive rebound and put it back in as Dominguez rattled off four straight points to cap the 16-0 run and a compelling 40-26 lead with 4:12 left in the third stanza.  Jeffcoat put the Mountain Lions lead back to double digits when she laid in a bucket with just two seconds left in the quarter for a 45-34 UCCS advantage.
  • Jeffcoat stayed hot in the paint making the first two field goals of the final stanza as UCCS outscored the Cowgirls, 21-14 in the final 10 minutes as they rolled to their seventh win of the season.
