UCCS Takes Down Newman in 2021 Season Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team battled to pick up a hard-fought season-opening 3-2 victory over Newman University on Friday night at Mountain Lion Stadium.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: UCCS 3, Newman 2
Records: UCCS (1-0, 0-0 RMAC), Newman (0-1, 0-0 GAC/MIAA)
Facility: Mountain Lion Stadium | Colorado Springs, Colo.
All-Time Series: UCCS holds a 4-2 all-time record against Newman dating back to 1991

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Mountain Lions came out of the gate firing as Kolby Raineri and Adam Baldwin quickly put Newman goalkeeper Laurin Aumeller to the test with back-to-back shots on goal in the opening three minutes of the match.
  • In what would shape up to be a physical match throughout, the Jets went on to receive three yellow cards in the first half. Despite the cautions, Newman would get on the board first for a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute after Duarte Mendes hooked a free kick in Mountain Lion territory just over the outstretched reach of UCCS goalkeeper Andreas Kokoska.
  • Liam McGuire would bring the Mountain Lions back to even at 1-1 with just eight seconds remaining in the first half after he took a pass from Kaydon Zamora-Reeves down near the box and put it into the back of the net.
  • Following a short weather delay out of the half, Nic Grotle converted a penalty kick to put the Mountain Lions up 2-1 in the 53rd minute.
  • Newman struck back in the 71st minute after a red card on Baldwin set them up with a penalty kick of their own, which was converted by Mendes for his second goal of the night to knot the match up at 2-2.
  • The tie game would be short-lived, however, as midfielder Adin Schwenke broke away with the ball towards the goal and drew another penalty kick for UCCS in the 72nd minute. UCCS called on Luka Cecic to take the penalty kick, who punched the ball into the right side of the net to give the Mountain Lions a 3-2 lead.
  • The Jets threatened in the final minutes after a late yellow card on Komil Khatamov, but the Mountain Lions would hold on for the 3-2 victory.
