Lacrosse Sets Program Record for Most Wins in a Season

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Angela Naughton and Madison McGriff led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team to a 12-9 home win Wednesday evening over Colorado State University Pueblo to complete the season sweep.  UCCS defeated the ThunderWolves on their home turf on April 3, 17-9.  Tonight's win is the Mountain Lions eighth win of the season, besting their previous mark of seven wins in 2018.

All-Time Series: UCCS has won back-to-back games over CSUP and trail the Pack in the all-time series, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions took a 6-3 lead into halftime and led by as many as four goals in the first half.  Naughton scored her first of three goals two minutes into the game.  The Pack's Olivia Tener tied the match eight minutes later before Kiera Lowe sparked a 4-0 run by the Mountain Lions as Lowe, Mallory Corrigan, Audrey Napp and Holly Sodomka found the back of the net to put UCCS up, 5-1.
  • Two straight goals by CSUP cut into the Mountain Lions lead, 5-3, but Corrigan ended the half on goal with 11 ticks remaining.
  • Naugton started the second half just like the first as she netted a goal in the 33rd minute.  Lowe found Julia Patrick less than a minute later followed by Lowe's second goal of the game in the 35th minute to give UCCS their largest lead of the game, 9-4.
  • The Pack stormed back and scored five straight goals in less than five minutes, coming within one goal of tying the game, 9-8.
  • With less than nine minutes left in regulation, Teresa Lacayo stopped the Pack's scoring on an unassisted goal.  CSUP added one more goal with 7:20 left, but the Mountain Lions sealed the win as Naughton and Chole Harding scored two goals in the final three minutes. 
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Both teams attempted 14 shots in the first half, but the Pack edged UCCS in total shots, 34-30.
  • UCCS picked up 33 ground balls to CSUP's 26, but the Pack dominated the draws, winning 18 of 23.
  • Madison McGriff recorded a career high 19 saves as a majority of the saves were on one-on-one shots. 
  • Angela Naughton paced the offense with three goals and three assists for a game six points.  She added a team high seven shots and six shots on goal.
  • Lacayo led the defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
  • Emily Eller paced the Pack with eight draw controls, six shots, four shots on goal and three points.
 
UP NEXT
UCCS will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, May 1 at home against Regis University.  UCCS will honor their seven seniors before the match begins at 1 p.m.
