Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Road Loss to Griffins, 18-14

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team suffered just their second loss of the season Tuesday night, falling on the road to Westminster College, 18-14.  The Mountain Lions defeated the Griffins in the season opening game on March 5, 20-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Westminster scored the first goal of the before Audrey Napp connected with Kiera Lowe to tie the match.  Natalie Church gave UCCS a 2-1 lead nine minutes into the game, but it would be the Mountain Lions last lead of the match as WC rattled of four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Down by three goals in the first half, Kyer Frederick found the back of the net for back-to-back goals to cut into WC's lead, 7-6, but the home team would outscore UCCS in the final minutes, 3-1, to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.
  • In the second half, the Mountain Lions cut into the Griffins lead, 11-9, when Mallory Corrigan assisted on two straight goals for Napp and Kiera Lowe.  WC responded with 3 straight goals to snatch a 14-9 lead 20 minutes left in regulation. 
  • UCCS fought back as Napp tallied two goals to bring UCCS within three of WC, 14-11, but the Griffins held off the attacking Mountain Lions to net two of the final three goals.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • The Mountain Lions scored seven goals in each half and outshot the Griffins, 49-27.  UCCS landed 33 of their shots on frame, 18 of which came in the second half.
  • UCCS won 19 draws, four more than the Griffins, but were edged in ground balls, 40-35. 
  • The Mountain Lions forced WC to commit 26 turnovers while UCCS only committed 12.
  • Audrey Napp led UCCS with four points behind three goals and an assist.  She added six shots, three ground balls and two draws.
  • Kiera Lowe also recorded a hat trick to go with her team high 11 shots.
  • Holly Sodomka and Church each won a team high four draws.  Church attempted five shots in the game as Sodomka picked up three ground balls.
  • Kennedy Travis made four saves in 51 minutes of action.
  • The Griffins Eden Freiberg led both teams with 14 points, seven goals and 14 shots.

The Mountain Lions will play their final two regular season games at home, beginning Wednesday, April 28 at 4 p.m.
