Mountain Lions Maul Grizzlies in Shutout Fashion, 17-0

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It was an all around dominant performance for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team on Sunday as the Mountain Lions shutout the Adams State University Grizzlies 17-0 in Mountain Lion Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The scoring frenzy began right out of the gate in only the 2nd minute of play as freshman Julia Patrick broke the scoreless tie off a Mallory Corrigan assist for Patrick's fifth goal of the season.
  • Patrick's quick goal was only the beginning for the Mountain Lions as Kiera Lowe and Mallory Corrgian each notched a hat trick in the first half to accommodate for six of the 13 goals in the first half.
  • Defensively it was the Mountain Lions who controlled the match as the Grizzlies were only able to record two shots including one shot on goal in the first 30 minutes. UCCS added 11 draw controls and 14 ground balls as the Mountain Lions went into halftime with the comfortable 13-0 lead.
  • The second half featured another dominant display by the Mountain Lions as they continued to contain the Grizzlies while adding to their lead.
  • After scoring her first goal of the season with a man down early in the first half, senior Heather O'Hearn kept the offensive momentum on the Mountain Lions' side by scoring back-to-back goals in the 31st and 33rd minute to solidify the third UCCS hat trick performance of the game and bring the score to 15-0.
  • As the Mountain Lion defense held ASU to two shots for the second half, Kyer Frederick and Miranda Smith tacked on two more scores for UCCS as Smith finished off her hat trick with the final score of the game in the 53rd minute to claim the 17-0 win.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
 
  • The Mountain Lions held ASU to 2 shots in each half as UCCS finished the game with 28 shot attempts.
  • Thirteen of the Mountain Lions 17 goals came in the first half. 
  • UCCS picked up 26 ground balls to ASU's 17.
  • Four Mountain Lions registered a game high three goals as senior Mallory Corrigan led the way with five points in the match after adding two assists. Miranda Smith and Heather O'Hearn each finished the day with four points of their own off three goals and one assist with O'Hearn also tacking on a game high six shots and five shots on goal.
  • Defensively, Teresa Lacayo and Aliyah Weant combined for five of the team's 11 caused turnovers with Weant notching a team high three caused turnovers and Lacayo recording two caused turnovers. Lacayo also added a team high four groundballs while Weant added three of her own.  
  • Goalkeeper Emma Becker makes her first start of the season and comes away with the win after playing the final 45 minutes and making two saves.
  • Freshman Antonia Batuello tallied her first collegiate minutes by registering 14 minutes in goal and making one save.
  • Redshirt Sophomore Holly Sodomka led the game with four draw controls as she also added her fifth assist of the season.
  • The Mountain Lion defense allowed the least amount of shots (4) since 2018 when they held Westminster College (Mo.) to no shots.

UCCS will head to Salt Lake City, Utah on Tuesday, Apr. 20 to face Westminster College.
