Softball Falls at No. 19 Colorado Mesa in Sunday’s Doubleheader

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The 19th-ranked team in Division II handed the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team two setbacks on Sunday as Colorado Mesa University defeated the Mountain Lions, 14-4 (five innings) and 11-3 (five innings) in the series finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1
 
  • The Mountain Lions were down 8-0 to CMU after three innings of action as the Mavericks tallied 10 hits, including three home runs and two doubles.
  • UCCS entered the fifth inning trailing the Mavericks, 8-0, before Brianna Santos hit a grand slam to plate four runs and cut into the Mavericks lead, 8-4.
  • CMU answered in the bottom half of the inning, recording six runs on four hits.  Four of CMU's runs came off two home runs.
 
STATS FROM GAME ONE
 
  • Santos led the offense with two hits, four RBI and one run scored. 
  • Mia Perez added two hits and one run scored as the Mountain Lions finished the game with six hits.
  • Braelyne Crenshaw started in the circle and suffered the loss, pithing one and one-third innings with five earned runs and six hits.
  • The Mavericks Brooke Doumer accounted for three of CMU's five home runs.  She added four runs scored and four RBI.  Lauren Wedman and Ellie Smith each chipped in three hits as the Mavericks plated 14 runs on 14 hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2
 
  • After a scoreless first inning from both teams, the Mavericks took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after batting through the lineup.
  • Santos hit a solo shot in the top of the third inning for her second home run of the day to put the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard, 4-1.
  • CMU added three runs in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 7-1. 
  • UCCS chipped in two runs in the fourth inning as Peyton Reisman and Taylor White hit back-to-back single RBIs, scoring Sawyer Brewster and Meghan Waidler.
  • The Mavericks extended their lead to 11-3 with four more runs on three hits in the fourth inning.  CMU held UCCS to one hit in the fifth inning to seal the win, 11-3, and win the series, 3-1.
 
STATS FROM GAME TWO
 
  • The Mountain Lions recorded five hits from Santos, Waidler, Saleen Quinonez, Reisman and Taylor White.
  • Cami Duffey pitched one and two-third innings, allowing one earned run on four hits.  Gabrielle Cronin finished the game for UCCS, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and striking out two batters.
  • Ashley Bradford accounted for three of the Mavericks 11 hits and three of their 11 runs.

  • UCCS will stay on the road next weekend when they travel to New Mexico Highlands University April 24-25.
