Mountain Lions Complete Series Sweep over Black Hills State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team earned a home sweep against Black Hills State University.  The Mountain Lions won the first game of the day, 13-4 in five innings, followed by an 8-3 series finale win.

All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions lead the all-time series over BHSU, 22-5, and have won the last 15 games.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1
 
  • Brianna Santos led off game three of the four game series with a home run.  Meghan Waidler added two more runs to the count when she tripled down the left field line to score Solana Martinez and Saleen Quinonez.  The next batter, Morgan Hernandez-Belew, doubled to left center, bringing home Waidler to give the Mountain Lions a 4-0 lead after one inning.
  • Halie Litwin put the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard after driving in Baileigh Hubbard from third base.
  • Leading 4-1 to start the second inning, Mia Perez led off the inning drawing a walk and quickly crossed home plate after the next batter, Santos, notched her second home run of the game, giving UCCS a 6-1 lead.
  • UCCS kept the offense rolling in the second inning, adding six more runs, including three from Taylor White's home run.
  • The Yellow Jackets cut into the Mountain Lions 12-1 lead in the top of the third inning when Shayla Tuschen hit one over the fence for a three-run home run. 
  • Owning a 12-4 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Solana Martinez led off the final inning with a single home run, sealing the win for UCCS, 13-4.
 
STATS FROM GAME ONE
 
  • Pitcher Gabrielle Cronin earned her first win in the circle this season.  Cronin pitched all five innings, allowing just two earned runs on five hits while fanning four batters.
  • Meghan Waidler paced the Mountain Lions offense, going 2-for-2 at the plate with four runs batted in and two runs scored.  Both of Waidler's hits were extra base hits behind a home run and a triple.
  • Brianna Santos went yard twice to tally three runs batted in.
  • Catcher Taylor White accounted for three runs batted in.  White, who hit her first home run of the season, went 2-for-3 while adding four putouts defensively.  
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2
  • The Mountain Lions bats stayed hot to start off the series finale against the Yellow Jackets.  After three straight singles by Santos, Quinonez and Resiman to start the first inning for UCCS, Payton Romines cleared the bases with a grand slam.
  • Quinonez batted in the fifth run for UCCS in the bottom of the second inning, scoring Mia Perez from second base.
  • UCCS extended their 5-0 lead with two more runs in the fifth inning when Romines and Martinez hit back-to-back single home runs.
  • BHSU started to mount a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on four hits, but UCCS put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning after taking advantage of a throwing error by the Yellow Jackets. 
  • The Mountain Lions defense held the Yellow Jackets to one hit and bases loaded in the final outing of the series.

STATS FROM GAME TWO
 
  • Braelyne Crenshaw earned the win in the circle, pitching the first six innings. Crenshaw fanned six batters and allowed three earned runs on nine hits.
  • Lexi Rayburn closed the game, holding BHSU to one hit and no runs in the final inning.
  • Santos, Quinonez, Reisman and Romines each tallied two hits, totaling eight of the Mountain Lions 11 hits in the final game.
  • Romines batted in a game high five runs and crossed home plate twice. 
  • Quinonenz led the defense with five assists from second base as Reisman put out nine runners at first base.
 
UP NEXT
UCCS will be back in action tomorrow morning to finish their series against Chadron State College, which was postponed from Feb. 27.
