Rayburn Pitches Mountain Lions to a 4-2 Win over ASU

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Pitcher Lexi Rayburn went the distance Saturday afternoon to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team to a 4-2 win at Adams State University.  The Mountain Lions fell in the series opener earlier in the day to the Grizzlies, 6-2.

All-Time Series: The series is tied at 15-15.  UCCS has won five of the last six games.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1
 
  • Leadoff batter Brianna Santos hit her seventh home run of the season to give UCCS a quick 1-0 lead.  The next batter, Mia Perez, drew a walk to reach first base.  Three batters later Sawyer Brewster brought home Perez to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead after one inning of work.
  • Both teams went three-and-out in the second inning and combined for two base runners and no hits in the third inning.
  • The Grizzlies took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning behind four hits, three of which were three triples, that led to four runs. 
  • UCCS was unable to plate another run the remainder of the game as the Grizzlies added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning for a 6-2 win.
 
STATS FROM GAME ONE
 
  • Peyton Reisman accounted for two of the Mountain Lions five hits. Santos finished with one hit, one run scored and one RBI. 
  • Braelyne Crenshaw started in the circle and pitched the first 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits and fanning two batters.  Gabrielle Cronin finished the final 2.1 innings, surrendering two earned runs and five hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2
 
  • The Mountain Lions did most of their damage in the fourth inning, scoring three runs to break a scoreless game.  With two outs and runners on first and second, Meghan Waidler singled to center field to place Reisman from second base.
  • Morgan Hernandez-Belew added the second run for UCCS after scoring from a wild pitch that also moved Waidler to third base.
  • Taylor White gave the Mountain Lions a 3-0 lead after placing the ball down the left field line to plate Waidler and give UCCS a 3-0 lead.
  • The Grizzlies responded in the bottom half of the inning to prevent the shutout with one run.
  • UCCS took a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning when Maddie Unrein doubled to left field to score Taylor White from first base.
  • ASU matched UCCS' run in the bottom half with a sac fly.
  • Leading 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, pitcher Lexi Rayburn fanned two batters and held ASU to one hit to seal the win.
 
STATS FROM GAME TWO
 
  • Solana Martinez and White registered two hits each as the Mountain Lions finished with nine hits against ASU.  White finished game two with one run scored and one RBI.
  • Reisman went 1-for-1 with one walk and one run scored. 
  • Rayburn pitched a complete game, holding the Grizzlies to two runs and six hits while striking out 10 batters.

  • The Mountain Lions and Grizzlies will play games three and four of the series on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
