Weant, Mountain Lions top Griffons at Home, 19-13

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Aliyah Weant led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team to a 19-13 win at home Friday afternoon over Missouri Western State University.  Weant was one of three Mountain Lions to record a hat trick as she found the back of the net five times.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The first half featured both teams evenly matched in possessions and shots. 
  • UCCS grabbed a 2-0 lead behind goals from Natalie Church and Audrey Napp.
  • The Griffons knotted the game at 3-3 but that would be as close to UCCS as they would come as the Mountain Lions never trailed MWSU.
  • Hannah Koopal's goal at the midway mark in the first half gave UCCS their largest lead of the half, 7-4, as they kept the momentum going into halftime with a 10-8 lead.
  • The second half belonged all to the Mountain Lions as they outscored the Griffins 9-5 and attempted 26 shots while the defense held MWSU to only nine shot attempts.
  • The Mountain Lions scored five of the first six goals to open the second half, including Church's game-winning with 13:19 left in regulation.
  • Weant netted the final goal of the game for UCCS, giving the Mountain Lions their largest lead of the match, 19-11.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
 
  • Weant tallied three of her five goals in the first half.  She finished with 11 shots and nine shots on goal while picking up three ground balls.
  • Napp added a hat trick and an assist for four points as 11 of her game high 12 shots landed on frame.
  • Church registered four shots in the game with three of them finding the back of the net.  She won a game high six draw controls and caused two turnovers.
  • Koopal recorded six shots, four draws and picked up two ground balls.
  • The Mountain Lions won 22 of the 34 draws in the game and picked up 23 ground balls to the Griffons 16.
 
UP NEXT
The Mountain Lions will travel to Fort Lewis College on Sunday, March 21 for a non-conference match against the Skyhawks.  Action starts at 11 a.m.
