Volleyball Outlasts Cougars, 3-2

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – For the fourth time this season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team went the distance to five sets.  The Mountain Lions notched their second straight five-set road win tonight, this time against Colorado Christian University.

All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions extend their winning streak to four matches and are 34-20 all-time against CCU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UCCS edged the Cougars in the first set, 25-21.  Maren Burkhart led the Mountain Lions with four kills without committing an error behind eight attempts.
  • Lauryn Shockley added three kills as UCCS hit a solid .290 in the opening set.
  • The Mountain Lions took advantage of the Cougars errors as they netted six service errors and six attack errors.
  • CCU evened the match at 1-1 after winning set two, 25-18.
  • The Mountain Lions offense slowed down in the second set as they were held to seven total kills.
  • The Cougars registered a .320 hitting mark in the second set while holding UCCS to a .040 hitting percentage.
  • Five of the Cougars points in the second set came from aces and four more points from blocks.
  • UCCS regained the lead, winning set three by 11 points, 25-14.
  • The Mountain Lions struck only two errors at the net while putting down eight kills and a strong .353 hitting percentage.
  • CCU flipped the script in the fourth set, holding the Mountain Lions to only eight points in a 25-8 setback.  The Cougars did not record one hitting error while UCCS posted three kills and a .-190 hitting mark.
  • Hannah Ammerman led UCCS in the deciding match, posting three kills, two aces, two digs and a block.

STATS FROM THE MATCH
 
  • The Mountain Lions finished the match hitting .135 behind 36 kills on 111 attempts.
  • Emily Ettel tallied 25 of the team's 32 set assists and added three aces and four kills.
  • Four Mountain Lions tallied at least five kills as Ammerman and Shockley notched a team high eight kills each.
  • Grace Ferguson chipped in six kills and hit .417 at the net.  Defensively, she blocked one attack and assisted on three more blocks.
  • UCCS served up 12 aces as Jordyn Kinsey recorded a match high four aces.  Ammerman also added three aces while Kinsey dug up a team high 17 attacks.
  • The Cougars were led by Jacey Johnson's match high 14 kills.
  • CCU registered six more kills than UCCS, 42-26, but committed 17 service errors.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UCCS head coach Chrissy Elder is two wins away from earning her 100th career win at UCCS (98-103).  In nine seasons as a collegiate head coach, Elder owns a 105-126 all-time record.
  • Tonight's match at CCU was their first match in almost two weeks for the Mountain Lions.  UCCS last competed at Adams State on Feb. 25 in a 3-2 win.
 
UP NEXT
  • UCCS will host their final home matches of the regular season on Thursday, March 18 in a RMAC pod.  The Mountain Lions will play host to South Dakota School of Mines at 11 a.m., followed by a neutral site match between SDSM and Western Colorado University.  The Mountain Lions will cap off the night with a 7 p.m. match against the Mountaineers.
