Softball Falls Short in Friday’s Doubleheader at Chadron State

CHADRON, Neb. – Playing in their first games of the conference season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team lost two close games to Chadron State College on Friday in the Eagles home opening series.  The Mountain Lions lost in nine innings to open the series, 8-7, and fell 7-4 in a shortened game.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1
 
  • Chadron State opened their home season with a bang as their first batter of the game, Bailey Marvel, went yard for a quick 1-0 lead.  CSC added one more run in the opening inning and led 3-0 after two innings.
  • Trailing 5-0 heading into the sixth inning, the Mountain Lions stormed back to knot the game at 5-5 after posting five runs on six errors in the sixth inning.  Solana Martinez led off the inning and reached base on a single to the left side.
  • The following batter, Morgan Hernandez-Belew, drew a walk to place runners on first and second base.  Taylor White put UCCS on the scoreboard when she singled to right field to bring home Martinez from second base. 
  • With Hernandez-Belew on second base and pinch runner Bryan Horton on first, Sawyer Brewster stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter for Mia Perez and drove both base runners home from a single to right field.
  • Perez re-entered the game for Brewster and moved to second as Brianna Santos reached base on a single.
  • With runners on first and second and no outs on the scoreboard, Cambria Jeffers pinched hit for Saleen Quinonez as the Eagles made a pitching change.  Jeffers was thrown out at first base but was able to move Santos and Perez into scoring position. 
  • Peyton Reisman knotted the game for the Mountain Lions with a double down the left field line to score Santos and Perez.  The Eagles closed the inning as UCCS went through the batting lineup with Martinez lining out to second base for the final out.
  • Both teams went three-up, three-down in the seventh to force extra innings.
  • Neither team recorded a hit in the eighth inning but both teams drew a walk to record a base runner.
  • The Mountain Lions started the ninth inning loading the bases with the first three batters – Payton Romines, Martinez and Hernandez-Belew.  Humphries scored the go-ahead run, 6-5, when Hernandez-Belew reached base on a fielder's choice without an out recorded.
  • Perez drew a walk to load the bases before Santos hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Martinez for an insurance run.
  • Leading 7-5 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mountain Lions defense had two outs on the Eagles with runners on the corners and two outs.  An error by UCCS led to an unearned run by CSC to cut into UCCS' lead, 7-6. 
  • The Eagles Allie Mason hit a walk-off double to left field to seal the win for the home team, 8-7.
 
STATS FROM GAME ONE
 
  • Braelyne Crenshaw pitched a complete game, allowing five earned runs on nine hits while fanning six batters.
  • Five Mountain Lions recorded at least two hits in the game.  Martinez led the offense with three hits on four plate appearances and scored two runs. 
  • Reisman went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. 
  • The Eagles were led by Marvel's three hits, three runs scored and a RBI. 
  • CSC stranded eight base runners as 12 were left on base for UCCS.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2
 
  • The Eagles again took a quick lead to start the game, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding another in the second to lead 4-0 after two innings.
  • UCCS responded with another huge inning of their own, this time from a grand slam by Brianna Santos.  With one out in the top of the fourth, Santos homered to drive home Perez, Hernandez-Belew and Meghan Waidler to tie the game at 4-4.
  • The Eagles response came from Ellie Owens who led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a home run to give CSC a 5-4 lead.
  • Owens came through again for the Eagles in the fifth inning, hitting a single that plated two runs to give CSC a 7-4 lead and the eventual final score.
  • The game was halted after the top half of the sixth inning was completed with CSC leading, 7-4.  It was later called a complete game, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the conference opening series.

STATS FROM GAME TWO
 
  • Waidler went 2-for-3 from the plate with a double as she accounted for two of UCCS' five hits.
  • Santos drew a walk to go with her four RBI, hit and run scored.
  • Lexi Rayburn pitched the first 3.1 innings. She surrendered four earned runs on three hits and struck out two batters.
  • Owens led the Eagles with two hits on two at-bats, three RBI, a walk and a run scored.
  
UP NEXT
Weather permitting, the third and fourth game of the series will be played tomorrow, Feb. 27 beginning at 11 a.m.
