Mountain Lions Close Opening Weekend against Orediggers, #25 Chaps

CANYON, Texas – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team closed their season opening weekend on Sunday against Colorado School of Mines (L, 2-5) and No. 25 Lubbock Christian University (L, 9-1). UCCS went 1-3 at the West Texas A&M Invitational in Canyon, Texas.

All-Time Series: With today's win, CSM leads the all-times series over UCCS, 7-19-1.  The Orediggers have won five of the last six meetings.

All-Time Series: UCCS is 1-4 all-time against Lubbock Christian.  The Mountain Lions earned their first win over LCU last season (Feb. 16, 2020) in a 2-0 neutral site win from Edmond, Okla.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Vs. Colorado School of Mines
  • Colorado School of Mines scored three of their five runs in the opening inning after the Orediggers pitcher Kyle Redding hit a three-run home run.
  • After three innings at the plate, UCCS was held to one hit and two base runners. Mines extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third inning with two hits and two UCCS errors.
  • Mia Perez put the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard in the fifth inning.  She singled to lead off the inning.  Morgan Hernandez-Belew's single moved Perez to second before she reached third base on an error. Brianna Santos brought Perez home on a sacrifice fly to left field.
  • Trailing 5-1 in the final inning, Santos led off the inning with a double to left center and crossed home plate on Peyton Reisman's sac fly.
  • UCCS was forced into back-to-back outs to end the game, 5-2, in favor of CSM.
 
Vs. Lubbock Christian University
  • Both the Chaps and Mountain Lions started the final game of the WT Classic going three-and out in the first inning.
  • The Mountain Lions escaped a jam in the top of the second inning as LCU loaded the bases before Payton Romines notched an unassisted out to close the inning. 
  • After two scoreless innings, LCU put the first run on the scoreboard after collecting three hits and two runs in the third.  In the bottom half of the inning, Taylor White was the first Mountain Lion to reach base after capitalizing on a LCU fielding error.
  • Lubbock Christian continued their offensive output in the fourth inning, adding three more runs to take a 5-0 lead while holding UCCS scoreless through four innings.
  • Trailing 9-0 in the sixth inning, Mia Perez led off the inning with the Mountain Lions first hit of the game.  Perez moved to second base after Brianna Santos laid down a bunt.  With runners on first and second, Peyton Reisman stepped to the plate and singled up the middle to score Perez from second base and put the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard.

STATS FROM THE GAME
 
Vs. Colorado School of Mines
  • Gabrielle Cronin pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while adding four strikeouts.
  • Santos paced the offense, going 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, a run scored, a double and a sac fly.
  • Hernandez-Belew accounted for two of the Mountain Lions five hits.
  • Redding of CSM went the distance with two earned runs and five hits.  Offensively she added two hits, three RBI and scored two runs.
 
Vs. Lubbock Christian
  • All three hits for UCCS came in the final inning from Santos, Reisman and Perez.  Reisman collected the RBI as Perez scored a run to prevent the shutout.
  • Defensively, Reisman posted eight putouts at first base.
  • Cami Duffey started in the circle and pitched the first 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs.
  • LCU's Savannah Wysocki led all players offensively with four hits, two runs, two RBI and a double.

The Mountain Lions will open the conference season Feb. 27-28 at Chadron State College.
