Mountain Lions Comeback at BHSU Falls Short, 68-63

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Time ran out on the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team as their fourth quarter comeback at Black Hills State fell short Friday night, 68-63, at the Donald Young Center in Spearfish, S.D.

All-Time Series: UCCS leads the all-time series against the Yellow Jackets, 11-7.  BHSU has won the last two matchups and five of the last six meetings.


HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tatum Tellin made her first of two three-pointers to start the game and give UCCS a 3-0 lead. BHSU responded and went on a 10-0 run.
  • The Mountain Lions chipped away in the first stanza and closed the quarter with a three-pointer from Maddie Golla to cut into the Yellow Jackets lead, 22-18.
  • Trailing 32-24 in the second quarter, UCCS went on a 14-2 run with Abby Feickert scoring eight of the Mountain Lions 14 points.  Feickert's trey with 2:02 left in the first half closed the 9-0 run and gave the Mountain Lions a 38-34 lead.
  • UCCS held the lead into the locker room at halftime, 38-36, after outscoring BHSU in the quarter, 20-14.
  • Both teams battled back and forth in the third quarter with neither team leading by more than four points.
  • Golla drained a three-pointer as time expired in the third stanza to bring UCCS within one point, 48-47.
  • The Yellow Jackets would keep their lead throughout the fourth quarter and lead by as many as 11 points with 4:11 left in the game.
  • UCCS rallied in the comeback, scoring six points with 1:27 remaining.  Tellin hit a jumper followed by back- to-back baskets from Jessica Nation with 15 seconds to go, but BHSU sealed the win with two made free throws and only 13 ticks left on the clock.

STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Feickert led all scorers with 17 points as 15 of them came from behind the arc.
  • Tellin added 12 points from 5-of-10 field goals.
  • Nation followed with eight points and a team high six rebounds.
  • Mercy Gonzalez came off the bench to register seven points, five rebounds and three assists.
  • Racquel Wientjes led BSHU with 15 points and nine rebounds.
  • The Mountain Lions shot 44.6 percent from the floor (25-56), 38.5 percent from behind the arc (10-26) and 60 percent from the charity stripe (3-5).
  • BHSU attempted 14 more free throws than UCCS, making 15-of-19 for 78.9 percent.
 
 
UP NEXT
The Mountain Lions will travel to Chadron State College Saturday night.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
