Mountain Lions Swept by Yellow Jackets, 84-78

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team was swept by Black Hills State University during the regular as the Mountain Lions fell on the road, 84-78, Friday night at the Donald Young Center in Spearfish, S.D.  The Yellow Jackets, who have not played a game since defeating the Mountain Lions at home on a last second shot on Feb.1, have won four of the last five meetings.

All-Time Series: Both teams are tied at 10-10 in the all-time series. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UCCS started the game scoring the first five points behind DaRaun Clark's jumper and a three-pointer from Wyatt Dolberry.
  • BHSU retaliated with a 7-0 run and led by as many as 14 points in the first half, 42-28.
  • The Mountain Lions trailed by 10 at intermission, 43-33.
  • UCCS was solid from the floor in the first half, making 15-of-28 field goals for 53.6 percent, but were 1-of-10 from long range and 2-of-5 from the free throw line.
  • BHSU held the lead for the entire second half, holding off a late rally by UCCS.
  • Down by nine points with 4:14 left in regulation, 77-65, the Mountain Lions started to mount a comeback.
  • Dolberry started the comeback with a three pointer, followed by Cameron Underwood making one of two free throws and then a layup by Dolberry with 2:05 left in the game.
  • Alijah Comithier hit two free throws to bring UCCS with seven points, 80-73.  Almost 60 seconds later, Underwood made another layup at 00:39.  The Mountain Lions defense forced a 10-second backcourt turnover, giving UCCS the ball back which led to a three-pointer from Dolberry, brining UCCS within two points, 80-78, and 20 seconds left on the clock.
  • Forced to foul to get the ball back, the Yellow Jackets were sent to the line twice and made all four free throws to take the win, 84-78.

STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Dolberry led four Mountain Lions in double figures with 19 points.  He made 8-of-16 field goals and 3-of-6 from long range while pulling in seven rebounds.
  • Clark added 14 points, four rebounds and four steals.
  • Comithier and Underwood each netted 13 points.
  • Geoff Kelly tied Dolberry with a team high seven rebounds. He also dished out two assists and blocked one shot.
  • UCCS made 32-of-64 field goals and 4-of-25 from three-point range.
  • BHSU was led by Joel Scott's 38 points and 11 rebounds.
  • The Mountain Lions outscored BHSU in the paint, 46-42, and scored 13 points off 15 turnovers.
 
 
UP NEXT
UCCS was scheduled to play at Chadron State College tomorrow night, but that game has been postponed.  The Mountain Lions will play next at home when they host Colorado Christian University on Feb. 18 and MSU Denver on Feb. 20.
