PUEBLO, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season tonight and nearly upset the 24
th ranked team in Division II, Colorado State University Pueblo. The Mountain Lions came up just short in their upset bid, 54-49, inside Massari Arena.

- All-Time Series: The Pack lead the all-time series, 39-22. The Mountain Lions, who are 6-27 against CSUP on the road, last defeated the ThunderWolves on Feb. 2, 2021 at home, 75-56. Their last win over CSUP on the road was a year prior, with the Mountain Lions earning a 67-59 road win on Feb. 2, 2019.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jessica Nation put the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard first after picking up an offensive rebound and putting it back in for a 2-0 UCCS lead. After a quick score from CSUP to tie the game, Sophie Abela scored her first two points to give UCCS the lead back, 4-2. Both teams would trade off the lead nine times in the first 10 minutes of action. Shelby Megyeri scored her seventh and eighth points of the quarter from two free throws before CSUP ended the opening stanza scoring four straight points to take a 20-16 lead.
- The defense clamped down in the second quarter as both teams each scored eight points. Combined, the Mountain Lions and Pack made 7-of-35 from the floor as UCCS held the ThunderWolves scoreless from three-point range on five attempts.
- The Mountain Lions entered halftime trailing by four points, 28-24, but started the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 31-28 lead. Megyeri started the scoring run with two made free throws followed by three straight points from Abela to give UCCS a 29-28 lead. A fastbreak layup from Nation gave UCCS a 31-28 lead to cap off the 7-0 run.
- After a media timeout halfway through the third quarter, UCCS sparked another run, outscoring the Pack 8-1 in a span of three and half minutes.
- The 8-1 run was started after Ellie Moore grabbed a rebound off her missed layup and put it back in for a deuce. CSUP made the second of two free throws to knot the game at 35-all. Jasmine Jeffcoat added four points off of layups while Abela added another fastbreak layup to hep give UCCS their largest lead of the game, 41-35, with 1:36 left in the third quarter.
- UCCS led the Pack, 41-36 after three complete quarters, but the Pack chipped away at the lead, starting with two free throws and a field goal. Nation gave the Mountain Lions their six-point lead back, 46-40, after an old fashion three-point play. Nation's field goal with 7:13 left in regulation would be the last field goal for the Mountain Lions as the ThunderWolves went on a 12-0 run and held UCCS to just three free throws in the final minutes as CSUP came from behind to take the win at home, 54-49.
GAME STATISTICS
- Jeffcoat led all players with 14 points after sinking 6-of-10 field goals and pulling in a team high eight rebounds. She added three steals on the defensive end of the court and dished out two assists.
- Nation and Megyeri added 12 points each and combined for five rebounds.
- Agar Farres stole the ball a game high five times and snagged four rebounds.
- The Mountain Lions hit 19-of-57 field goals for 33.3 percent and 11-of-17 free throws for 64.7 percent, but were held without a three-point field goal on seven attempts.
- UCCS outscored the Pack in the paint, 30-22 and on second chance points, 14-11.
- CSUP was led by three players scoring 12 points each as Jazzy Hughes came off the bench to net 12 points and grab a game high nine points.
