Mountain Lions Take Down Grizzlies on the Road, 71-60

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Graduate student Jasmine Jeffcoat recorded a double-double to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team to a 71-60 win at Adams State University Saturday night.  Jeffcoat notched a game high 17 points and 11 rebounds as UCCS won their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the season.

  • All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions lead the all-time series over ASU, 25-18, including wins in their last eight meetings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jeffcoat and Shelby Megyeri dominated the first quarter, accounting for 13 of UCCS' 14 points.  Jeffcoat won the jump ball and proceeded to give UCCS a 6-0 lead after making three straight layups.  It was Megyeri's turn next as she netted the next seven points off of jump shots, including a three-pointer to give UCCS a 13-9 lead.  Agar Farres netted one of two free throws to end the opening stanza for a 14-12 UCCS lead.
  • The Grizzlies chipped away at UCCS' lead in the beginning minutes of the second quarter.  Elaina Watson made a layup 90 seconds into the quarter to bring the Grizzlies within two points, 18-16, but the Mountain Lions kept the Grizzlies in check and never lost the lead.
  • In the final four and half minutes of the second quarter, UCCS outscored ASU, 10-2.  Ellie Moore started the scoring spree with a step-around layup as Gracie Haneborg, Jeffcoat and Megyeri contributed to the 10-2 run as UCCS took a 35-25 lead into halftime.
  • After one half of action, Megyeri led all scorers with 11 points on 5-of-9 field goals while Jeffcoat accounted for nine points and eight rebounds. 
  • The Grizzlies attempted a comeback in the third stanza, outscoring UCCS, 21-17, including five more made field goals, but the Mountain Lions made six more free throws (8-2) to maintain the lead and a 52-46 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
  • After ASU started the final quarter with two free throws, Megyeri nailed her second trey of the game to spark an 11-4 run.  Nation added a pair of layups as Jeffcoat and Alexa Dominguez each drilled jumpers that gave UCCS their largest lead of the game, 63-52.
  • The Mountain Lions defense locked down on the Grizzlies in the final minutes, holding ASU scoreless in the last 2:34 of regulation.  In desperation mode, the Grizzlies attempted four three-pointers in the final 87 seconds and were scoreless, including a blocked three-point attempt from Moore.
 
GAME STATISTICS
  • Jeffcoat finished the night making 6-of-12 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws.  Eight of her 11 rebounds were on the offensive glass.  She also dished out a team high three assists and added two steals.
  • Six of Megyeri's 16 points came from downtown as she made 6-of-10 field goals and 2-of-4 free throws.  Megyeri added seven rebounds and matched Jeffcoat for a team high three assists.
  • Nation registered 10 points, four of which came from the free throw line, and added two assists, six caroms and a blocked shot.
  • Three of UCCS' six blocks tonight came by way of Moore, who came off the bench to net eight points, two assists, five rebounds and three blocks.
  • UCCS made 41.3 percent from the floor, draining 26-of-63 field goals.  The Mountain Lions attempted 12 more free throws than ASU, making 16-of-30 while the Grizzlies made 10-of-18 from the line.
  • UCCS held a 21-rebound advantage (51-30) and outscored ASU on second chance points, 15-7. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Tonight's 51 rebounds matches a season high for UCCS, while the six blocked shots are the most in 2021-22.
  • UCCS led the entire game, making it the first time this season the Mountain Lions have never trailed or had the score tied.
  • Tonight also marked the sixth time this season UCCS has out-rebounded their opponent, and the fourth time they have shot better than 40 percent from the floor.
  • The 21-rebound advantage is the most this season.
  • Sophie Abela tallied a career high two blocks, while Dominguez' seven rebounds were a career high. Megyeri also added career highs tonight in points (16) and made field goals (six).
  • Jeffcoat's double-double was her first of the season and second of her career.
 
UP NEXT
  • UCCS will travel to Air Force on Wednesday for an exhibition game at 6:30 p.m.  The Mountain Lions will play their first home league game on Saturday when they play host to Colorado School of Mines at 5:30 p.m.
