Mountain Lions Earn Bids to 2021 NCAA DII National Championships

11/8/2021 6:00:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs cross country programs have qualified for the 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Championship meet, announced by the NCAA this afternoon.

The championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 20 in Saint Leo, Fla. at The Abbey Course. Saint Leo University and Tampa Bay Sports Commission will serve as hosts. The women's race will begin at 6:30 a.m. (MT), followed by the men's race at 7:45 a.m. (MT).

The No. 6 UCCS women's program automatically qualified for the national meet this past Saturday after taking third place at the NCAA South Central Regional meet.  The top three teams from each of the eight regions automatically qualified for the national meet.  As a team, the Mountain Lions will be competing in their 12th NCAA Championship race (2021, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2006, 2004, 2002, and 2000).  This year's national championship meet will be the fifth straight year UCCS has competed in the national championship race, and the fifth time UCCS has qualified under head coach Corey Kubatzky.

The No. 12 UCCS men's program was just outside of earning an automatic bid after placing fourth overall, but the Mountain Lions were one of 10 teams to receive an at-large bid.  UCCS will be competing in the national meet for the eighth time in program history (2021, 2019, 2018, 2014, 2012, 2011, 2008, 2004) and in their third straight national meet.  Seven of the eight times UCCS has qualified as a team for the national meet have come under head coach Mark Misch who took over the program in 2007.

A live webstream of the championships will occur on www.NCAA.com from 8:30 a.m. (ET) until the conclusion of the awards ceremony.
