PREVIEW | Mountain Lions Play Final Regular Season Home Matches against BHSU, SDSM

THIS WEEK'S MATCHUPS
  • The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team will play their final home matches of the regular season this Friday and Saturday inside Gallogly Events Center.  The Mountain Lions will play host to Black Hills State University on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. match on Nov. 6 against South Dakota School of Mines on Senior Night.
 
MATCH COVERAGE  
LAST TIME OUT
  • UCCS is coming off a road split after sweeping Chadron State College on Friday night before falling to No. 12 Colorado School of Mines in three sets on Saturday.
  • Against the Eagles of Chadron State, Hannah Ammerman led all players with 16 kills and finished the match hitting .481 on 27 attacks and three errors.  She added an ace, nine digs and a block assist.  Outside hitter Lauryn Shockley added a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs while hitting .400, while Camden Strain chipped in eight kills and a .538 hitting mark to lead all players.  Setter Emily Ettel posted 44 assists, four digs and six kills.  As a team, UCCS registered 57 kills, 50 digs, four blocks and hit .403.
  • The following evening against then-ranked No. 12 Mines, Shockley and Strain combined for 17 of UCCS' 25 kills.  Shockley finished the match with nine kills, a .238 hitting mark and four digs.  Strain added eight kills on a .235 attack percentage for eight points.  Ettel posted 19 of the Mountain Lions 24 assists.  Defensively, Jordyn Kinsey tallied a team high six digs and served two of the Mountain Lions three aces.  UCCS registered 25 kills, hit .095, blocked two attacks and dug up 22 attacks. 
  • In the road split, Ammerman and Shockley each put down 20 kills and hit over .300.  Shockley registered a .326 hitting mark while Ammerman hit .317.  Strain followed with 16 kills and a solid .367 attack percentage.  Ettel averaged 10.5 assists per set as Kinsey led the team with 20 digs.
 
RMAC RECORD/STANDINGS
  • The No. 1 team in Division II, MSU Denver, continues their top spot in the RMAC rankings with a perfect 14-0 RMAC record (20-2 overall).
  • Both of the Mountain Lions opponents this weekend are tied with UCCS for 10th place in the RMAC Standings.  Joining UCCS, BHSU and SDSM with a 4-10 record and a four-way tie for the 10th slot is New Mexico Highlands.
 
THE SERIES
  • Vs. Black Hills State:  Since the series started in 2012, the Mountain Lions have won 10 of 13 matches against the Yellow Jackets.  UCCS is 4-2 at BHSU, including their last win over the Yellow Jackets on the road, 3-0, on Sept. 21, 2018.
  • Vs. South Dakota Mines: UCCS leads the all-time series over the Hardrockers, 8-1.  SDSM's win over UCCS last spring snapped an eight-match winning streak over the Hardrockers.  The last time UCCS defeated SDSM was Oct. 4, 2019 in a home sweep.
  
SCOUTING REPORT
  • BHSU Yellow Jackets: BHSU enters Gallogly Events Center on Friday on a two-match winning streak.  BHSU's 3-2 home win last Friday over Adams State snapped a five-match losing streak.  The Yellow Jackets (7-15, 4-10 RMAC) followed Friday's win with a 3-1 win against New Mexico Highlands on Saturday.  BHSU is 0-9 on the road this season.
  • The Yellow Jackets are led by Madison Hoopman who ranks eighth in the league in kills (3.18 per set) and ninth in points (3.47 per set).  Libero Haedyn Rhoades has dug up the fourth most attacks in the RMAC, averaging 4.18 digs per set.  Setter Karly Marx is averaging 8.19 assists per set, the seventh most in the RMAC, while Peyton Bodemann is protecting the net with 87 blocks (sixth in the RMAC, 1.00 blocks per set).
  • As a team, the Yellow Jackets are in the middle of the pack defensively, ranking seventh in the RMAC in digs (14.2 per set) and blocks (1.9 per set).  They are averaging 11.3 kills per set and hitting the ball at a .156 rate.
  • SDSM Hardrockers: South Dakota School of Mines is coming off a home split against Adams State (W, 3-1) and New Mexico Highlands (L, 3-2).  SDSM owns a 10-12 overall record (4-10 RMAC) and they are 4-5 when playing on the road this season.
  • The Hardrockers lead the RMAC in attacks per set (40.03) and total attacks (3,443).  Their 11.9 kills per set are the ninth most in the league while owning the second most digs in the RMAC, digging up 17.2 attacks per set.
  • Jacey Koethe leads the Hardrockers both offensively and defensively at the net.  Koethe is averaging a team high 2.27 kills per set along with a .253 attacking percentage, and her 0.92 blocks per set are the most on the team and eighth most in the league, while her 3.10 points per set rank her 14th in the league.  Emma Grimm and Addie Stanley rank 11th and 12th in the RMAC in digs per set as they are averaging 3.69 and 3.61 digs, respectively.
 
HOT TAKES
  • In Friday's sweep at Chadron State, Madison McIntosh posted career highs in kills (two) and attacks (three).  Katelyn McMoore's two blocks (block assists) were career highs while Strain hit a career high .538.  UCCS recorded multiple season highs for a three-set match, including kills (57), attempts (119), assists (50), and digs (50).  The Mountain Lions also hit a season high (.403).  Friday's sweep was the first sweep by UCCS in a league match, and their first sweep since Sept. 3, 2021 against Minot State. 
  • Following Saturday's match against South Dakota Mines, the Mountain Lions will recognize three seniors graduating from the program – Maren Burkhart, Grace Ferguson and Director of Operations Meaghan Oosterhous.
  • Jordyn Kinsey is currently sixth in digs in the career record books.  Kinsey has accounted for 1,315 digs in four seasons, and is 91 digs shy of fifth place, held by Kim Catlett (2012-15, 1,406 digs).  She needs 496 digs to become the all-time leader at UCCS, currently owned by Andrea Weedman (2004-07) with 1,811 career digs.
  • Jordyn Kinsey's 265 total digs this season are the 16th most in the RMAC.
  • Shockley is ranked in the top 10 in the league in kills per set (fifth, 3.36), total kills (second, 279), attacks per set (seventh, 8.57), total attacks (eighth, 711) and points per set (sixth, 3.74).
  • Emily Ettel has tallied 9.29 assists per set and 585 total assists, ranking her fifth and seventh in the league, respectively.
  • UCCS is in the top half of the league in several categories, including hitting percentage (fifth, .216), kills per set (fifth, 12.43), and assists per set (sixth, 11.07).
 
UCCS UNDER HEAD COACH CHRISSY ELDER
  • Chrissy Elder is in her ninth season as the Head Coach for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball program in 2021 after seven consecutive RMAC Tournament appearances for the Mountain Lions.
  • Elder won her 100th match as head coach of the Mountain Lions, accomplishing the feat in a 3-2 home win over Texas A&M International on Friday, Sept. 10.  In nine seasons at UCCS, Elder owns a 105-121 record (.463), and she has a head coaching career record of 112-145 (.436) over 10 seasons.

UPCOMING MATCHES
  • The Mountain Lions, who are contending to be one of the top eight teams in the league to qualify for the 2021 RMAC Tournament, will close out the regular season portion of their schedule with a road trip Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 at MSU Denver and Colorado Christian University.
