INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: UCCS 3, RU 2
Records: UCCS (5-4-1, 1-2 RMAC), Regis (6-3-1, 2-1 RMAC)
Facility: Regis Match Pitch | Denver, Colo.
All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions move to 17-41-8 all-time against Regis dating back to 1986.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Mountain Lions raced out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when sophomore Luke Sussex was fouled in the penalty box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity for Alex Andersson, who fired past a diving Regis goalkeeper for the score.
- UCCS would add to the lead in the 34th minute when redshirt senior Liam McGuire drew a yellow card just outside the corner of the penalty box, creating a direct free kick chance for UCCS. Andersson would take the free kick and bend a beautiful strike around the defense into the top left corner of the net for his second goal of the game, putting the Mountain Lions ahead 2-0.
- Regis outshot UCCS 17-6 in the first half, but the Mountain Lions held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal and managed to find the net twice while holding the Rangers scoreless.
- After taking a pass from teammate Kolby Raineri and making a move on the defender, Andersson capped the night with his third goal of the match, giving the Mountain Lions a 3-0 cushion in the 54th minute.
- Regis would score goals in the 61st and 80th minutes to close in on the lead, but the Mountain Lions clamped down on defense in the final 10 minutes to secure their first conference win of the season by a score of 3-2.
STATS FROM THE GAME:
- Regis held the advantage in shots (31-9), shots on goal (12-5), and corner kicks (12-0), but it was the Mountain Lions who were opportunistic with their chances to come out with the victory.
- Midfielder Alex Andersson recorded the first hat trick of his career, pacing the Mountain Lions with five shots and four shots on goal while scoring each of the Mountain Lions' three goals.
- Goalkeeper Andreas Kokoska registered a career-high nine saves while facing 31 shots as he played the full 90 minutes in net for the Mountain Lions.
- Sophomore Adin Schwenke, redshirt junior Garrett Daulong, and redshirt senior Jose Zertuche also logged complete 90 minute efforts in the win.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Andersson has now scored in each of the four games he has played this season, and is the first Mountain Lion to score in four straight games since Alex VonHolle scored in seven straight during the 2018 season.
- Andersson becomes the 14th player in program history to record a hat trick, and the first since Kolby Raineri accomplished the feat in 2019.
- With another successful penalty kick in the first half against Regis, the Mountain Lions now lead the nation with seven converted PK's this season.
- The win against Regis was the first for UCCS since October of 2018.
