Volleyball Takes ThunderWolves to Five

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After taking a commanding 2-0 set lead Tuesday night, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team battled to five sets against Colorado State University Pueblo, but fell short in the end, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions dominated the first two sets, recording 15 kills and a .353 hitting mark in the opening set before adding 14 kills and a .294 hitting percentage in set two.  In the two sets combined, UCCS notched 29 kills and hit .324 while holding the ThunderWolves to 14 total kills and a -.028 attack percentage.
  • Maren Burkhart was on fire in the opening sets, accounting for eight kills on 15 attempts without an attack error for a staggering .533 hitting mark. 
  • Both teams battled back and forth in the third set as Camden Strain registered five kills and a .400 hitting mark.  Three ThunderWolves combined for 12 of the team's 18 kills as CSU Pueblo outlasted UCCS in the third set, ending the action on a 6-1 run as they put down four kills as part of their final six points to prevent the shutout and cut into UCCS' match lead, 2-1.
  • The Pack responded in the fourth set and flipped the script as they held UCCS to only seven kills and a .029 hitting mark while countering the Mountain Lions with 16 kills on 29 attempts (.338).
  • The fifth set featured four lead changes and nine scoring ties but it was the Pack who came back from two sets down to win the match, 3-2.  With the set tied at 11-11, the ThunderWolves tallied a kill and blocked an attack for a two-point advantage, 13-11.  Strain came out of UCCS' timeout to cut into CSUP's lead after a kill, 13-12, but a kill by CSUP and a UCCS setting error sealed the win for the Pack.
 
MATCH STATISTICS
  • Four Mountain Lions recorded at least 11 kills tonight.  Burkhart led both teams with 16 kills and added a .333 hitting mark.  Strain chipped in 15 kills followed by Hannah Ammerman's and Lauryn Shockley's 11 kills apiece.
  • Strain recorded career highs in total attempts (35), block assists (four) and aces (three).
  • Emily Ettel dished up 46 of the Mountain Lions 53 assists and added two kills, 12 digs and 46 assists. 
  • Jordyn Kinsey dug up a match high 20 attacks and added six assists and an ace.
  • UCCS posted 58 kills on the night and hit .234 with five aces and five blocks.
  • The Pack notched 56 kills, a .195 hitting mark, 43 assist, eight blocks and 64 digs.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UCCS is 2-3 in five-set matches this season.  Four of their five-set matches have come at home.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will travel to Regis University on Friday, Oct. 8 for a 7 p.m. match.
