Mountain Lions Place Third Overall at RMAC Championship; Almasri Finishes Runner-Up

GOLDEN, Colo. – Layla Almasri led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to a third place finish at the 2021 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country 6k championship meet, hosted by Colorado School of Mines at Applewood Golf Course in Golden, Colo.  Almasri finished second overall in 21:36.4 as the Mountain Lions scored 90 team points.

AROUND THE COURSE
  • Layla Almasri's runner-up finish was her highest finish at a RMAC Championship Meet as she earned her second straight All-RMAC First Team award.  She was joined on the All-RMAC First Team by Hannah Ellis who posted a 10th place finish with a personal best 6k time of 22:26.7.
  • Competing in her first career 6k race, Anna Fauske earned an All-RMAC Second Team honor after crossing the finish line in 16th place in 22:45.8.  Riley McGrath came in fourth for the Mountain Lions and 29th overall with a time of 23:14.0, followed by Kate Hedlund in 33rd place in 23:28.3.
  • Just outside of scoring for UCCS was Kelsey Rycenga in 36th place with a time of 23:35.0, as Sarah Bassett and Nadine Almasri each ran personal best 6 times of 23:42.2 and 24:26.1, respectively.
             
RACE LEADERS
  • Brianna Robles of Adams State University bested all runners with a winning time of 21:18.4.  She helped the Grizzlies to the team title with 40 points as Colorado School of Mines finished third with 71 points.
 
BEYOND THE FINISH LINE
  • The Mountain Lions third place finish was the 13th time in program history they finished third at the RMAC Championship. 
  • Almasri joins Shannon Payne (2006, 2008) to finish the highest of any Mountain Lion at a RMAC Championship race (second place).
  • Layla Almasri's All-RMAC finish was the third of her career.  She earned second team honors in 2019 before first team honors in 2020 and 2021.
  • Teammate Hannah Ellis also earned her third career All-RMAC honor after receiving second team accolades in 2018 and first team honors in 2020 and 2021.
  • Six teams running today are nationally-ranked in the USTFCCCA Top 25: No. 1 Adams State, No. 4 Colorado School of Mines, No. 6 UCCS, No. 7 Colorado State Pueblo, No. 10 Western Colorado University and No. 19 Colorado Christian University.
 
UP NEXT
  • UCCS will compete next at the NCAA South Central Region championship meet, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Lubbock, Texas.
