Mountain Lions Rally against Mavericks; Fall Short 3-1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After facing a 2-0 set deficit to Colorado Mesa University Friday night, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team rallied back to win set three but fell just shy in the fourth set, falling to the Mavericks by set scores of 12-25, 26-28, 25-19 and 17-25 inside Gallogly Events Center.

  • All-Time Series: The Mavericks fifth straight win over UCCS tonight gave them a 36-8 advantage in the all-time series.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Colorado Mesa owned the opening set with a 25-12 score after holding UCCS to eight kills while boasting 18 kills of their own and a .739 hitting mark on 23 attempts (one attack error).
  • The Mountain Lions quickly bounced back in the second set to push it to extra points.  A block by Maren Burkhart and Emily Ettel followed by a service ace from Hannah Ammerman gave UCCS their first lead of the night, 5-4.  UCCS wouldn't trail the Mavericks until Holly Schmidt served an ace that gave CMU a 26-25 advantage.  A quick attack from Ettel after a UCCS timeout on the following serve knotted the set at 26-26, but the Mavericks prevailed, winning a video review challenge for set point, 27-26, followed by a block on UCCS' attack to take set two, 28-26.
  • UCCS didn't waste any time in the third set, taking a 14-6 lead and posting a six-point win, 25-19.  Lauryn Shockley led the Mountains after hitting a staggering .667 behind six kills and zero attack errors on nine attempts.  She added two of the team's four service aces in the set while Ettel posted 11 set assists.
  • In the final set of the night, both teams tied each other seven times and exchanged the lead four times before CMU snagged a 15-11 lead.  CMU held the lead the remainder of the set and ended on a 5-1 run that included four kills.
 
MATCH STATISTICS
  • Shockley and Burkart paced the Mountain Lions, combining for 30 of UCCS' 55 kills.  Shockley finished with a team high 17 kills and a .282 hitting percentage as Burkhart hit .375 with 13 kills. 
  • Ammerman and Shockley each registered two aces.  Ammerman added eight kills, five assists, a team high 11 digs and a block.
  • Ettel charted 37 assists as the Mountain Lions hit .296 offensively (55 kills, 125 attempts).
  • The Mavericks were led by Sydney Leffler's match high 20 kills and .514 hitting mark, committing only two errors on 35 attempts while also adding two solo blocks. CMU hit .425 as a team behind 63 kills on 120 attempts and added seven blocks defensively at the net.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Tonight's match was the first time UCCS played four sets at home this season.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will close out their four-match homestand Saturday night against Westminster College at 5 p.m.
