HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UCCS used their defense at the net to win the first two sets.  The Mountain Lions quickly moved to a 13-5 lead in the opening set before FLC fought back to tie the set at 20-20.  Maren Burkhart moved UCCS to a 22-21 lead after serving her third ace of the set.  An attack error by FLC forced the Skyhawks to take a timeout as UCCS led the set, 23-21.  Three rallies later Hannah Ammerman and Grace Ferguson blocked a Skyhawks attack to seal the win, 25-22.
  • The second set started with the Mountain Lions trailing by four points early on, 7-3, but the Mountain Lions fought back after a block, two FLC attack errors and back-to-back kills by Lauryn Shockley to knot the match, 8-8.  Shockley added another combo of back-to-back kills to tie UCCS again with FLC, 15-15, and take their first lead of the set, 16-15.  UCCS was close to winning the set, 24-20, but the Skyhawks forced a service error followed by two kills to cut into the lead, 24-23.  Ammerman and Burkhart teamed up to block FLC's final attack to seal the win, 25-23, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Skyhawks weren't ready to go home as they evened the match after winning sets three and four, 25-18 and 25-22.
  • Both teams exchanged the lead eight times in the final set.  An attack error by FLC gave the Mountain Lions a 13-11 lead and two points away from winning the match but the Skyhawks notched a kill and forced UCCS into an attack error to tie the set at 13-all.  Fort Lewis prevailed after a kill from Chailyn Swenson and block on UCCS to take the match win, 3-2.
