Raineri’s 2OT Golden Goal Leads Mountain Lions Past Adams State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Midfielder Kolby Raineri fired home a double overtime golden goal in the 107th minute to help the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team defeat Adams State, 2-1, on Thursday night at Mountain Lion Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:      
  • The Mountain Lions outshot the Grizzlies 11-1 in the opening 45 minutes, but neither team managed to crack the scoreboard as the first half ended in a scoreless tie.  
  • UCCS would finally get the scoring started in the 70th minute when Jack Souder sent a cross to redshirt senior Adam Baldwin, who fired a left-footed strike into the back of the net to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • Holding a one-point advantage, the Mountain Lions went on the defense looking to hold ASU scoreless over the final 20 minutes of the match, but with less than a minute remaining in regulation, the Grizzlies would tie the game at one off a direct free kick from 35 yards out that deflected off the bottom portion of the crossbar and into the goal.
  • Neither team would score in the first overtime period, though the Mountain Lions would threaten with three shots on goal. UCCS' best chance to score in the period came in the 96th minute when they had three shots, two on goal, in a 15 second span, but the Grizzlies defense held tough to keep the score tied.
  • After battling back-and-forth to open the second overtime period, Kolby Raineri sent a strike toward the net in the 107th minute that deflected off the hands of ASU goalkeeper Logan Rabasca into the net for the golden goal in a 2-1 win.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • The Mountain Lions held the advantage over Adams State in shots (28-11), shots on goal (11-3), and corner kicks (7-1)
  • Adin Schwenke, Kolby Raineri, and Luka Cecic tied for the team lead with four shots apiece.
  • UCCS had five players play the entire 107 minutes in the victory, including redshirt senior Adam Baldwin, junior Kolby Raineri, sophomore Adin Schwenke, sophomore Jack Souder and freshman Bogdan Vedernikov.  
  • Goalkeeper Andreas Kokoska also played the entire match in frame for the Mountain Lions, earning his seventh win of the season as he grabbed two saves on 11 shots faced.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The game-winning goal for Raineri was his second of the season, with both being golden goals in overtime wins for the Mountain Lions.
  • Each of the 13 Mountain Lions to log minutes on Thursday night recorded at least one shot.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Mountain Lions travel to Durango, Colo. to match up with Fort Lewis College on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m.
