Mountain Lions Keep It Close; Drop RMAC Opener Against Westminster College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team was outplayed on Friday afternoon against Westminster College as they fell in their RMAC opener by a score of 2-1.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: UCCS 1, WC 2
Records: UCCS (4-3-1, 0-1-0 RMAC), WC (4-5-0, 1-0-0 RMAC)
Facility: Mountain Lion Stadium | Colorado Springs, Colo.
All-Time Series: UCCS falls to a 12-9 all-time record against Westminster.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a scoreless first half on both sides, the Mountain Lions struck quickly in the second half after Alex Andersson was fouled in the penalty box. This led to a successful penalty kick by Andersson as he shot right with the goalkeeper diving left to put the Mountain Lions ahead 1-0.
  • It did not take long for Westminster to respond. In the 58th minute, Luke Merrill, on an assist from teammate, Kaden Amano, found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1
  • The Griffins played a strong offensive game, being very patient with the ball on the attack and it paid off in the 71st minute when Brennan Neeley weaved his way through the UCCS defense and took a shot that deflected off a UCCS defender and into the goal to take the lead, 2-1.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • The lone goal from the Mountain Lions, scored by midfielder, Alex Andersson, was his second goal of the season.
  • While shots were almost even in the first half with Westminster taking seven shots compared to six from the Mountain Lions, the second half was a different story with Westminster outshooting UCCS 14-3.
  • Six Mountain Lions totaled 90 minutes played in the match which included Kaydon Zamora-Reeves, Kolby Raineri, Liam McGuire, Kelton Hooker, Jack Souder, and Garrett Daulong.
  • Sophomore, Andreas Kokoska, played a strong game in goal for the Mountain Lions as he recorded a season-high six saves while facing the most pressure he's had all year with 21 shots faced in the match, also a season high.
  • Both Alex Andersson and forward, Jack Souder, had three of the Mountain Lion's nine total shots, each having two of their shots on target.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • With the one from Alex Andersson this afternoon, the Mountain Lions now have shot a total of five penalty kicks this year and they have made every one.
