Volleyball Charts First Conference Win of 2021 Season

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team earned their first win of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season Friday night, defeating Adams State University in Alamosa, 3-2.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP
  • Final Score: 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 15-10)
  • Records: UCCS (4-8, 1-4 RMAC) | Adams State (7-7, 3-2 RMAC)
  • Facility | Location:  Plachy Hall | Alamosa, Colo. 
  • All-Time Series: Adams State leads the all-time series, 32-24, but the Mountain Lions have won the last six matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The home team earned a 25-20 win in the opening set as both teams matched each other offensively.  ASU edged the Mountain Lions in kills, 15-14, and in hitting percentage, .323 to .241.
  • Sets two and three nearly mirrored each other as the Mountain Lions scored the first point in each set and never relinquished the lead.  Emily Ettel recorded an assist as Maren Burkhart notched a kill to open the second set, 1-0.  UCCS never trailed in the set as they posted a 7-1 run in the middle of the set to snag a 16-6 lead to wrangle in the win, 25-17, and even the match at 1-1.  UCCS outhit the Grizzlies, 14-7 in kills.
  • ASU started the third set off with an attack error after Camden Strain and Burkhart blocked Anna Huggins' attack.  The Mountain Lions kept the momentum going from the second set as they rolled to a 25-19 win.   UCCS put down 15 kills and hit a solid .462 in set three.
  • The Grizzlies responded in the fourth set and held UCCS to a .171 hitting mark with 10 attacking errors and five blocks by ASU.  Adams State knotted the match at 2-2 with a 25-19 win.
  • The fifth and deciding set belonged all to UCCS.  The Mountain Lions jumped to a 7-0 lead behind three kills from Lauryn Shockley (two) and Burkhardt (one) while forcing the Grizzlies to commit four attacking errors.

MATCH STATISTICS
  • Hannah Ammerman led UCCS with a match high 18 kills and 21 points to go with 12 digs and two blocks while hitting .293 at the net (18 kills, six errors, 41 attempts).  Burkhart added 16 kills and hit a team best .360 (14-5-25).  
  • Emily Ettel registered a match high 53 assists while Jordyn Kinsey led the back row with a match high 19 digs.
  • UCCS led Adams State in every major statistical category: kills (69-53), attempts (148-146), hitting percentage (.284-.171), assists (58-44), aces (4-1) and digs (49-45).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Tonight's win snapped a five-match losing streak.  UCCS is 2-2 this season in five-set matches.
  • Ammerman's 18 kills was one shy of her career high, while Ettel was two assists off from matching her career high of 55.

UP NEXT
  • UCCS will cross the border to play in Las Vegas, N.M. tomorrow night to face New Mexico Highlands University at 7 p.m.
