COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Department of Athletics extended their streak to five straight years of finishing in the top five of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Sports Competition Cup Standings. In an abbreviated year of sports due to COVID-19, the Mountain Lions earned 496 points.
Only Fall and Winter sports were calculated in this year's edition. Wild card sports were changed from top three in each gender to top two in one gender followed by the top one in the other to compile the highest point total. Colorado School of Mines won the 2019-20 All-Sports Competition Cup with a total of 641 points.
The RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup is awarded to the institution that accumulates the most points over the year based on its teams' outcome in the RMAC's four core sports, along with six wild card sports (excluding this year). The four core sports are football or men's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball, while the six wild card sports consist of three men's sports and three women's sports, which are designated by that institution's best finish in those 17 non-core sports (21 total RMAC sports).
Total RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup points are calculated based on how the teams finish in the RMAC regular season standings. In the scenario where teams do not have regular season standings, conference championship results are used. If there is a tie, points are combined and divided by the number of teams involved in the tie. Point fractions were rounded up if above 0.5.
UCCS scored 300 of their 496 points from the three wildcard sports as women's soccer, women's indoor track & field and men's indoor track & field each won their respective championships to earn 100 points each toward the standings.
The four core sports garnered 196 points as men's basketball led the four-team squad with 69 points after finishing in a tie for fifth place in the RMAC standings with a 13-9 conference record. Volleyball finished the RMAC regular season in a tie for eighth place (8-10 RMAC) as they earned 53 points toward the standings. Men's soccer (6-8 RMAC) and women's basketball (10-12 RMAC) combined for 74 points after placing ninth and 10
th (tied), respectively.
Individually, the Mountain Lions were honored with multiple RMAC awards throughout the fall and winter seasons. The women's soccer program earned the RMAC Player of the Year (
Shanade Hopcroft), the RMAC Freshman of the Year (
Tanner Sanders) and the RMAC Coach of the Year (Sian Hudson), while
Padiet Wang won the first ever RMAC Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year award for the Mountain Lions program. Head Coach
Ross Fellows swept the RMAC Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year awards after leading UCCS to two conference Indoor Track & Field championships.
Academically, three Mountain Lions received the RMAC Summit Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average (GPA), participating at the finals sites for each of the RMAC championships.
Maia Austin was named the RMAC Summit Award winner for women's cross country and women's indoor track & field as teammate
Will Ross took home the RMAC Summit Award for men's indoor track & field. In the fall,
Ella Fischer received the RMAC Summit Award for women's soccer.
