Ellis Scores Golden Goal to Lift Mountain Lions to 9-8 Overtime Win over Wildcats

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Madison Ellis scored the game-winning goal with 2:04 left in overtime to give the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team a 9-8 win over Northern Michigan University Monday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.  The win marked the Mountain Lions first win of the season as they improve to 1-3 overall.

The Wildcats netted the first three goals of the game but UCCS stormed back to score four straight goals by Angela Naughton (two goals), Kiera Lowe, and Chloe Harding to edge NMU by one goal at halftime, 4-3.

Harding scored her second straight goal just 21 seconds into the second half to give UCCS a 5-3 lead. After a goal by NMU's Madeline Bittell, Audrey Napp earned a spot in the scoring column with back-to-back goals to cap off a 7-1 scoring spree by the Mountain Lions.

Aleya Speas and Jessica Daniels combined to score the next three goals within a three-minute span to knot the game at 7-7.  Napp gave UCCS a one-goal edge in the 53rd minute to record her first hat trick of the season, but Speas and the Wildcats sent the game into overtime with only two ticks left in regulation.

Both teams remained scoreless in the first three-minutes of overtime.  Thirty-eight seconds into the second period, a Wildcat was sent to the penalty box giving UCCS a man-up possession.  Eighteen seconds later, Heather O'Hern found Ellis from the back-left side for the game-winning goal.

Napp led UCCS with three goals and won 10 of the Mountain Lions 16 draw controls.

Lowe and Harding attempted a team high six shots each.  Goalkeeper Kennedy Travis picked up 10 ground balls and made 12 saves in nearly 64 minutes between the posts.

NMU (2-2) edged UCCS on shots, 34-32, but UCCS outshot the Wildcats in overtime, 5-1.    All four of Northern Michigan's draw controls came in the second half.

The Wildcats were led by Daniels' three goals, four points, 10 shots and five ground balls.

UCCS will play their third straight home game on Thursday, March 5 against New England College.  Action begins at 3 p.m. at Mountain Lion Stadium.
