Mountain Lions Swept On The Road By Eagles

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The University of Colorado Springs baseball team lose both games on Saturday as the Mountain Lions get swept in the four-game series against Biola University.

It was a tough loss in game one as UCCS (2-6) battled against themselves in the 3-2 loss to Biola (9-1). The Mountain Lions only allowed one hit as starting pitcher Jonathan Cowles received the no decision through six innings of shutout and no-hit baseball. Between three UCCS pitchers, the Mountain Lions combined for eight walks in the game as Biola left six runners on compared to UCCS' five. Offensively, UCCS had seven of their nine hitters notch a base hit as Jake Anderson finished 2-for-4 and Riley Gregory had a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored in the game.

Game one didn't see its first run scored until the seventh inning as both teams held each other in check early on. UCCS' Anderson got the top of the seventh inning going with a single through the left side which led to a Gregory bunt that the Eagles turned into an out at second base in an unsuccessful sacrifice attempt, putting Gregory on off a fielder's choice. But a wild pitch advanced Gregory into scoring position at second base as John Mallon ripped a double to center field to break the scoreless tie 1-0.

One run was all that the Mountain Lions were able to generate as the Eagles answered back in the bottom of the seventh off relief pitcher Hayden Salverda. A leadoff walk followed by a wild pitch set-up an Eagle in scoring position with no outs in the inning. Salverda retired the next Eagle with a groundball putout to the right side that moved the Eagles' runner to third as a sacrifice flyball scored the tying run in the next at-bat to bring the game to 1-1.

UCCS miscues continued for the Mountain Lions in the bottom of the eighth as new relief pitcher Jon Sotto entered game and walked the leadoff batter. Biola turned to small ball as a sacrifice bunt advanced the Eagles' into scoring position with one out. After an intentional walk, Biola recorded their one and only hit in the ballgame to load the bases. Sotto worked the next batter to a 3-2 count but just missed the outside part of the plate for a full count walk that brought in the go-ahead run. Down 2-1, UCCS let another run across as a passed ball gave an insurance run to the Eagles for the 3-1 lead.

The Mountain Lions tried to claw their way back in the top half of the ninth as Gregory hit a solo home run to bring the game within one run, but Biola hung on to secure the 3-2 win.

Game two was a defensive heavy match-up with both teams combined for six total hits, as the Mountain Lions were edged out by BU at a final score of 2-1.

The Eagles leaned on the long ball all series and game four was not any different. Biola put the pressure on first in the ballgame as a solo home run in the bottom first gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead over UCCS.

In the second inning, the Mountain Lions capitalized off Biola's fielding mistakes as they tied the game up 1-1. Anderson represented the tying run as he led off the inning by reaching base from an error by the shortstop. Keeping the pressure on, Anderson stole second base and found his way to third base after the catcher committed a throwing error on the play. With Gregory up at the plate, Anderson came across to score thanks to a Gregory groundout to shortstop.

The game stayed tied for three innings until Biola struck again with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to take their second lead of the game at 2-1.

The Mountain Lions were unable to score for the remainder of the game as they left five runners on base over the course of the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning, including having bases loaded in the sixth and having a runner on second base in the seventh.

UCCS' Matt Berg, Gregory, and Mallon each tallied one of the team's three hits as Brian Marquez had a strong second outing as a Mountain Lion with five innings pitched and allowing one earned run off one hit, while recording seven strikeouts in the no decision. Redshirt freshman Creede Jeffers received the loss in game two after pitching one inning and only allowing one run off one hit.

UCCS' next series is scheduled for next weekend as the Mountain Lions host Northwest Missouri State University at home for a three-game series. The first game is set for Friday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. inside Mountain Lion Park.
