COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team takes home the victory in their home opener against Northwest Missouri State University (NMSU) by a score of 11-8. After a lackluster offensive display a week ago, the Mountain Lions woke the bats up to the tune of 11 hits including four doubles, two triples by
Walker Rumsey, and three home runs.
Matt Berg led the way for UCCS going 3-for-5 with two doubles, one home run and three RBI. Rumsey as mentioned above, tallied two triples in the game as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Matt Clarke and
Matt McDermott both tallied two hits and a home run in the game as well for UCCS.
Daniel Silva got the start for UCCS and pitched well as he went five full innings and allowed one run (earned) off three hits while racking up seven strikeouts in a no decision effort.
Jon Sotto (1-2) earned the win in a relief effort for UCCS as he allowed one run and struck out two in one inning of work.
Joseph Harris tallied his first save of the season as he allowed only one hit and no runs in the ninth inning.
UCCS wasted no time as they put up three runs in the first inning. Clarke and Berg hit back-to-back home runs to make the score 2-0 early.
Jake Anderson followed Clarke's home run with a double to right center and would later score off a
Ryan Schmidt single to give UCCS a 3-0 lead after the first. Each team scored one run in the third to make the score 4-1 UCCS.
After a scoreless fifth inning, NMSU exploded for six runs in the sixth off of a wild pitch, a walked in run and a grand slam, making the score 7-6 in favor of the Bearcats. UCCS would reclaim the lead in the seventh off a solo home run by McDermott and an RBI single from Anderson to make the score 8-7.
NMSU would add one in the top of the eighth, but UCCS would effectively seal the game in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an RBI triple from Rumsey, paired with a double from Berg that scored two. The Mountain Lions took that 11-8 lead into the ninth inning, where Harris closed things out to give UCCS their third win of the year.
UCCS and NMSU are back in action tomorrow as they will play a double header at Mountain Lion Park. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with the second scheduled for 2 p.m.
