Mountain Lions Open Season With Exciting Win Against Eagles

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team opened their 2020-21 season at home Friday night with a 73-68 win against Chadron State College. 
 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP 
Final: UCCS 73, Chadron State 68  
Records: UCCS (1-0, 1-0 RMAC), Chadron State (0-2, 0-2 RMAC) 
Location: Gallogly Events Center | Colorado Springs, Colo. 
All-Time Series: Mountain Lions Lead, 24-15.  The Mountain Lions are on a two game win streak and have won the last nine of 10 games.
  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • Chadron State opened up the game with two-points from Mardaeja Cross.  The first quarter was a slow start with the Mountain Lions finding the lead with just 37 seconds left,16-14.
  • Second Quarter the Mountain Lions found their momentum sinking six 3-pointers to secure a double-digit lead by the end of the half, 24-13.
  • The Eagles came out of second half with a fire underneath them capitalizing on a turnover from the Mountain Lions just 48 seconds into the third quarter.
  • UCCS was able to hang on to the lead with their stifling defense against CSC holding them to just 38% from the field.
  • Chadron's defense got more aggressive in the fourth quarter forcing seven turnovers bringing the score within five points with just two minutes left in the game, 69-64.
  • A commanding block from Freshman Jessica Nation at a last second lay-up by Chadron sealed the 73-68 win for the Mountain Lions.
  
 
STATS FROM THE GAME 
  • Tatum Tellin led the Mountain Lions with 14 points shooting 40 percent from the field, sinking two of the three 3-pointers (66 percent), and going 4-for-4 at the charity stripe.
  • Freshman Jessica Nation made her UCCS debut finishing with nine points and five rebounds.  Nation shot 60 percent from the field (3-for-5) and sunk a three-pointer.
  • 40 points for the Mountain Lions came from the bench.
  • Chadron was able to capitalize on turnovers gaining 23 points off Mountain Lion errors.    
 
BEYOND THE BOX
 
  • After a delayed season for UCCS (their first three games postponed) the Mountain Lions were able to work the kinks out and pull out a win for their home and season opener.
 
UP NEXT 
The Mountain Lions are scheduled to play host to Black Hills State University Saturday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m.  Fans are not permitted in Gallogly Events Center for home events this year.
