Mountain Lions Take Control Saturday Night For A Weekend Sweep

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team (4-11, 3-6 RMAC) dominated Adams State University (3-23, 2-6 RMAC) 69-54 for a weekend sweep Saturday night.  ASU started the game with the first two points of the game, but freshman Desiree Pierson answered with a three at the other end and the tone was set for the game.

The Mountain Lions held ASU to just four points in the first quarter, going on a 16-2 run.  Ally McKenzie helped the Grizzlies get back into the game in the second quarter forcing fouls inside the paint to get at the line.  McKenzie shot 100 percent at the line and scored five of ASU's 12 points in the second quarter. UCCS' defense was suffocating, forcing nine turnovers and holding the Grizzlies to just 20 percent from field goal range.  UCCS ended the first half with a 20 point lead, 36-16.

ASU made adjustments during half time and were able to match UCCS shot for shot in the third quarter.  The Grizzlies attempted to crawl their way back into the game out shooting UCCS in the fourth quarter 19-14, but it wasn't enough as the Mountain Lions controlled the rest of the game.  UCCS once again proved their dominance on defense forcing 16 turnovers for the night and capitalizing on 12. Thirty-eight of UCCS' points came from the bench and eight points from second chance shots.

Madi Gaibler ran the defense, preventing any second chance opportunities for the Grizzlies with 10 rebounds and one block for the game.  Gaibler also added seven points to the score and had four assists. Freshman Makenna Baker led the team with 13 points and added two assists and six rebounds to her stats.  Caley Barnard had a strong game on both sides of the court finishing with nine points, shooting 4-7 inside the paint and 50 percent behind the arc. Barnard racked up four rebounds, three assists, and a steal for the night.

Zakiya Beckles and Marshell Hollins kept the Grizzlies in play scoring a combined 23 points, with Hollins proving to be crucial on defense with four steals.

UCCS will travel to South Dakota next weekend to take on Black Hills State January 17 at 5:30 p.m. and South Dakota School of Mines January 18 at 4 p.m.
