SPEARFISH, S.D. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team faced a stout-shooting Black Hills State University squad Friday night in Spearfish, S.D. The Mountain Lions fell to the Yellow Jackets at the Donald E. Young Center, 79-62.
The Mountain Lions move to 4-12 overall and 3-7 in the RMAC, while BHSU improves to 10-5 overall and 7-3 in league games.
UCCS held a brief lead over BHSU in the first quarter, but the Yellow Jackets led for nearly 39 minutes while shooting well on their home court, hitting 26-of-55 field goals (47.3 percent), including a solid 14-of-28 from three-point range and only one miss on 14 free throw attempts (92.9 percent).
Abby Feickert and
Ellie Moore led the Mountain Lions offense. Feicket netted a team high 16 points and dished out a team high four assists. She was solid from the floor as she made 6-of-8 field goals and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Moore came off the bench to drop in 4-of-6 field goals and 3-of-5 free throws for 11 points.
Cleaning up the boards was
Madison Lord and
Chelsea Pearson. Lord pulled in a team high seven rebounds while Pearson snagged six caroms to go with her two assists and two steals.
The Mountain Lions shot 37.1 percent from the floor (23-of-62), 26.3 percent from three-point range (5-of-19) and 64.7 percent from the free throw line (11-of-17).
UCCS dominated the boards, outrebounding BHSU by 13, 42-29. Twenty-four of the Mountain Lions 62 points came from second chance points.
Three Yellow Jackets scored in double figures behind Morgan Ham's 19 points.
The Mountain Lions will travel to Rapid City, S.D. Saturday afternoon to take on South Dakota School of Mines at 4 p.m.
