Mountain Lions Upset Skyhawks in Home Win Friday Night

Colorado Springs, COLO - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team (3-11, 2-6 RMAC) had a huge win and upset against the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (10-3, 6-2RMAC) Friday night in the Gallogly Events Center.  UCCS made the first two points of the game and FLC quickly answered and set the pace for the first quarter, but the Mountain Lion defense kept them in the fight.

UCCS had a hard time finding their groove on offense in the first period only making three of 18 attempts.  The Mountain Lions found their rhythm on offense at three and a half minutes into the second quarter and were keeping pace with the Skyhawks shooting 10-36 to FLC's 9-32.  The first two quarters looked completely opposite with the first quarter finishing 6-16 in favor of the Skyhawks, and in the second quarter the Mountain Lions held FLC to just six points and went to add 18 to their score.

Both teams were neck and neck on rebounding offensively and defensively.  But the big turning point for the Mountain Lions came with 15 seconds left in the first half when Madi Gaibler was able to snag an offensive rebound, kick it to Abby Feickert behind the arc, and sink a three at the buzzer finishing the first half 24-22.

The Mountain Lions started the second half the way they finished the first and came out on the court with swagger.  Feickert lit the fuse and the team caught fire. Kaity Hovasse showed up nailing two big threes in the second half to extend the lead into double digits, 46-35. UCCS continued to play stifling defense preventing any easy shots within the paint forcing Fort Lewis to shoot from beyond the arc where they shot 2-21.

Feickert led the team in points with 18, shooting 50 percent from downtown and adding three assists and seven rebounds to her stats.  Hovasse went two for two from behind the arc and three for four at field goal range, like Feickert she also added three assists to her count and a block for good measure.

Katrina Chandler and Jordan Vasquez proved to be crucial for the Skyhawks to stay in the game scoring 29 of the teams 48 points.

The Mountain Lions look to continue their momentum against Adams State University tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. in the Gallogly Events Center.
