COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In what was a highly anticipated non-conference match up, the No. 24 ranked University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team upsets No. 10 West Texas A&M University at a final score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon, inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
The top-25 match up turned into a marathon as the Lady Buffs tried to keep up with an aggressive Mountain Lion offense that was led by a young freshman core. Freshmen
Tanner Sanders and
Nicolette Sandoval notched their first goals in the black and gold, with Sanders finding the back of the net twice against WTAMU. While sophomore
Amelia Junge and redshirt junior
Tarah Patterson each recorded a point with a pair of assists. The high-powered UCCS offense was firing on all cylinders as eight different Mountain Lions recorded a shot, while five different Mountain Lions placed a shot on frame.
In the first half, UCCS set the tone early with the first goal of the match coming in the second minute as Patterson found Sanders on a cross from 10 yards out, where Sanders handled the cross and dotted the right side of the net for a quick 1-0 UCCS lead.
From there the UCCS defense went to work as they held the Lady Buffs to just four shots, with only two of those shots coming on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alexis Walker received the nod to start the first half for the Mountain Lions, as she recorded one save and disrupted numerous WTAMU opportunities in frame to help preserve the first half shutout.
After doubling the Lady Buffs shots in the first half and walking into halftime with the 1-0 lead, the Mountain Lions went on the attack once again in the second half as Sanders lifted UCCS to a 2-0 lead in the 49
th minute off a UCCS free kick from 20 yards out.
UCCS was not quite finished as Sandoval received a midfield pass from Junge and came head-to-head with WTAMU goalkeeper Natasha Worm who came out of frame to disrupt the streaking UCCS freshman. Sandoval was able to shake Worm and put a shot on an open frame to extend the Mountain Lions lead to 3-0 in the 79
th minute.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Mountain Lions' backline did not hesitate in challenging WTAMU for 90 minutes of play as they limited the Lady Buffs to nine shots, and six shots on goal. UCCS held the advantage in both categories as they out-shot WTAMU 18-9.
In frame, the Mountain Lions went to freshman goalkeeper
Mollee Swift for the second half as Swift continued to keep the Lady Buffs out of goal with three saves of her own, and completing the UCCS shutout.
The Mountain Lions start the 2019 season with two home wins as they have outscored their opponents 6-1 in their first two games. UCCS will now hit the road for a long string of road games, beginning first with a California trip to take on California State Polytechnic University, Pomona on Friday, Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m. (MT).
