POMONA, Calif. – On Friday, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team played their first road game of the 2019 season and came out with a 1-0 victory over California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
After posting three goals in each of their first two matches, it would be a heavy dose of defense that would secure the 1-0 shutout win. UCCS was out-shot by the Broncos by a slim margin of 14-13, but freshman
Mollee Swift answered the call in frame once again as she recorded six saves in the match, bringing the Mountain Lions to hold the advantage in saves 6-4.
After the opening 45 minutes went scoreless, it was freshman
Kaitlin Hinkle who posted the game-winning goal in the 56
th minute, tallying her first goal as a Mountain Lion. The Broncos tried to surge back and hit an equalizer after the Hinkle goal, but Swift kept Cal Poly out of net by notching three saves in a six-minute span in the second half.
Hinkle and fellow freshman
Gabriella Lancaster led the team with three shots apiece, as seven different Mountain Lions registered a shot in Friday's contest.
The Mountain Lions now move to a perfect 3-0 with back-to-back shutouts, as Cal Poly falls to 1-2 on the season. No. 11 UCCS will continue their road trip on Sunday, Sept. 15 as they come face to face with California State University, San Bernardino for a 1:30 p.m. (MT) match.
