No. 11 UCCS Ends California Road-Trip with 1-0 Overtime Win Over CSUSB

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team ended their California road trip with an overtime nail biter as the Mountain Lions outlasted California State University, San Bernardino with a final score of 1-0 at Premier Field on Sunday afternoon.

No. 11 UCCS (4-0-0) out-shot CSUSB (1-3-0) 14-3 as the Coyotes held the advantage in saves at 3-0. The number one scoring offense in the South Central Region last season had no problem registering shots against CSUSB, but the Mountain Lions' backline stepped up big for the third week in a row as UCCS held the Coyotes to zero shots on frame in their third consecutive shutout of the season.

The first half was all UCCS as the Mountain Lions applied offensive pressure but were unable to score with five shots and one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes. On the opposing side, CSUSB had a hard time finding a rhythm on offense as the Mountain Lions defense swarmed the Coyotes and did not allow a single shot in the first half.

Holding each other scoreless in the first half, it would be the same story for the second half as the Mountain Lions out-shot CSUSB 8-3 with sophomore Amelia Junge and senior defender Aleesa Muir each supplying a shot on goal.

After 90 minutes of scoreless play, the Mountain Lions found their scoring opportunity in the 92nd minute with the UCCS underclassmen continuing to flourish as freshman Tanner Sanders found sophomore Kendall Stevenson for the 1-0 game winner.

UCCS' Junge and Stevenson led the team with three shots each as Sanders increased her point count to a team leading five points on the season.

UCCS will continue to be on the road next week as the Mountain Lions begin conference play with a Steel and Silver Showdown against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. match against New Mexico Highlands University on Sunday, Sept. 22.
