Hopcroft's Two Goals Lift No. 2 UCCS Past CSU-P, 2-1

PUEBLO, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team traveled down south for the conference opener against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday where the Mountain Lions won at a final score of 2-1 inside CSU-P Art & Lorraine Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.

No. 2 UCCS (5-0-0, 1-0-0 RMAC) dominated the offensive side of the ball as they out-shot the ThunderWolves (1-4-0, 0-1-0 RMAC) by a whopping 20-7, while also doubling CSU-Pueblo in shots on goal 8-4 and corner kicks 6-3.

UCCS redshirt junior Shanade Hopcroft had herself a game in the black & gold as she registered four points with two Mountain Lion goals, a team high three shots on frame, and tied with freshman Gabriella Lancaster for the team high in shots as they each had four. Senior Aleesa Muir and redshirt junior Alexandra Samuels each tallied a full 90 minutes on the backline Friday night, as Mitsy Ramirez came off the bench to contribute 47 minutes for the Mountain Lion defense.

In the first half, UCCS broke the scoreless tie with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute. A hard foul on Hopcroft gave the Mountain Lions a perfect scoring opportunity as the CSU-P goalkeeper bit right and Hopcroft tattooed the left side of net for a 1-0 UCCS lead.

The Mountain Lions were not finished as they came back in the last minute of play in the first half to increase their lead. A ThunderWolves foul near the 35-yard line on the right sideline set-up a UCCS free kick that would land in front of goal to be redirected to the far post, as Hopcroft knocked it home for her second goal and a 2-0 Mountain Lion lead.

CSU-P battled back in the second half and did not go down without a fight as they prevented the UCCS shutout with a goal in the 64th minute.

But the Mountain Lion backline along with freshman goalkeeper Mollee Swift held the ThunderWolves in check for the remainder of the second half as No. 2 UCCS held on to win 2-1.

The Mountain Lions will now head to Santa Fe, N.M. to take on New Mexico Highlands University for an 11 a.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 22.
