LUBBOCK, Texas – In what was a physical non-conference match, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team was edged out by Lubbock Christian University at a final score of 1-0 in their season opener at LCU Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.
It was a rugged match in Lubbock, Texas as both teams combined for 35 fouls in the defensive contest. The Mountain Lions and the Chaparrals each notched nine shots and three shots on frame as LCU held the slight advantage in corner kicks 6-4.
UCCS redshirt sophomore
Adam Baldwin and freshman
Jared Sinkinson led the way for the Mountain Lions with two shots each, as Baldwin also placed two shots on goal.
Each team was able to hold each other in check in the scoreless first half as the Mountain Lions didn't allow the Chaparrals to budge by only allowing three shots and no shots on frame with
Aaron Haefner and
Haiko Hovak helping neutralize the Chaparrals offense. Both Sinkinson and Baldwin recorded a shot on goal in the first half but were unable to find their way past LCU's Braxton Thorne in frame.
In the second half, the Mountain Lions tried to apply the pressure early as Baldwin and the UCCS offense raced down to place another shot on frame in the 46
th minute but were unable to come away with a score. Later in the half in the 54
th minute, the Chaparrals flipped the field where a cross from the right side of the field was placed inside the near post for an LCU goal.
The Mountain Lions bounced back to record three more shots after the second half goal but could not quite hone in their shots on frame as LCU came away with 1-0 victory.
UCCS will make the trip back home as they prepare for their home opener against St. Mary's University on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
